Does any one have a good idea when and where the Romans used square holes rather than round holes?

It would seem just as easy to punch a square hole as a round one. Using a pyramidally ended punch.

a square punch is simpler to make than a round one so that might be one reason?

In my experience though square holes are pron to tearing a littl emore easily though if the holes are supporting weight or a moving piece.

Hope this helps
