Recreating a legionair beginning 3rd Century

Quote:Yes, early September this year at Budapest.

To be honest you have me baffled to who it may have been. We do though, have have members from all over the country who don't do many events anymore, and who I have never actually met. Was it Bill?

On coifs, to my knowledge at present we only have one. It belongs to Paul Carrick, our commander and scale expert.

Sadly I don't have an image of him wearing it. We to have a Deepeeka Niedermoermter, though the brass one It is owed and worn in the picture below by Jamie McLean.

My spatha is actually one of the older Albion ones, bought before their prices went ballistic. It is a beautiful piece. The only real problem with it is the blade cross-section. It is diamond, where as by the 3rd it probably would have been lenticular. I can live with that though. Perhaps an old family heirloom from the 2nd C AD. Godfrey, who made my scabbard charged me £150 I believe. I think he may have retired though. He wanted to tour around the UK on a 1930s motorbike. Probably will be back for winter, and it could be worth enquiring. I will send you his address in a private message.

Gregory, Constaine & SSeverus

On those Deepeeka helmets - I personally would avoid 1 and 3, but I like number 2. And there are a few simple things that can be done to make 2 even better. But at the end of the day, we must each set our own standards and priorities. Perfection is impossible. I spent a lot of time getting my helmet right, but I have spent much less time on other less exciting parts of my kit. I will probably never get there, but if each year it gets a little better I am happy. Please don't let me put you off. It is the taking part that counts.

Hi Paul,

Hope you don't mind I have just posted your picture. I unfortunately don't have one of you wearing a coif though. Do you?

I have no up to date photo of my coif, nor can I photo it right now as Jamie borrowed it for a Comitatus event just before I moved. Here is an old photo by myself and a group photo. Since I first made it as part of an experiment I have upgraded it by making it larger and adding padding in the same form as the leg protectors worn by cricket players IE 2 layers of linen stuffed with linen. My head has survived a bashing with wooden swords and I do not feel the practise javelins as they bounce off.

Paul,

You can mail them to me if all else fails. I use: ( http://photobucket.com )

They each need to smaller than 100K though I think.

Hi Paul - great images !

How did you make these two subarmales ? Did you stuff them with linen or with felt ?

That's a task I still have to face :? cry:

Professor Ubl held a lecture at the last ROMEC about 'Panzerunterkleider' (armour undergarments) during which he lamented the lack of interest in the reenactment scene concerning this subject. I've given him your URL in return. But it has turned out he has no internet connection...

He didn't look like a con man. Brown hair, middle height, green shirt.
Hope I did not confuse something...
Paul, I could send you a group image via e-mail, perhaps you can recognise him ?

Sassanid, thank's for the adress !

And what do you think about another deepeeka helmet, the Buch one?
At our group (primagermanica.com) we have one, with some improvements. I know original probably was a unfinished helmet.

The subarmales which I have are stuffed with linnen and sheep skin chopped up. This creates a light and bouncy padding. another member stuffed his with woolen blankets, cut up in strips and rolled up and inserted into the tubes of the linen. These 2 are soft and flexable. In the hot weather I do not get hot underneath the subarmales. Graham stuffed his with linnen and wool so hard that it has little flexability but it gives fantastic protection. We have tested it with real weapons and staffs.

My coif at first had felt padding, it was to hot. I then replaced it with pure linen, now it is cooler.

yes please to the group photo. I will see if I can identify anyone from home.

BUCH HELMET - The Deepeeka pictures look good. I think the mouth area of the cheek piecies are wrong. The original has more holes in around the bowl that can not be explained. The one at the top for a Knob, the front holes for a triangular peek which is common for this type of helmet but what about the rear holes?

I saw a Deepeeka Buch helmet at Arbeia, the museum have bought some for static displays. I was not impressed with the cross pattern on the bowl. It was soldered on by the 4 endsonly so you could see a gap under it.

Yesss.... Actually the original has them driven out of the skull, they are not extra pieces attached to the helmet.
