WIN a Greek Aspis!
#1
Yes! YOU could be the proud owner of a Paul Allen-designed re-construction of a Classical Greek Aspis, complete with Porpax, Antilabe and hide cover!

Shields like this currently retail for around £400 sterling!

All you have to do is WIN the Race-in-Armour at the Ancient Greek Festival in Watford, UK on the 3rd/4th JUne, 2006. Hell, I'll even give it to you if I beat you!

There will also be prizes for other events! Want a prize? Enter an event.
Better still, propose an event you're good at!

Not an athlete? There will be prizes for Research Presentations, Drama, Dance, Living History and Craftwork. Present an artefact you have crafted!

The First International Ancient Greek Festival - be there or be a Barbarian!

What long legs? Im 5'9", too! The distance is 400m, Stefanos tells me, roughly a quarter of a mile. Not a sprint, but not an endurance race, either. Ite paides, indeed! Is that a phrase the Ancients actually used?
God willing, we'll all meet there, with many other friends.

Well ITE PAIDES is referenced by Herodotus in Salamina 480 B.C.
The other is parafrased from Pindaros.
If any body wants Motoes or any other phrases on their shields or equipment,
I will be glad to provide them in the Original Greek speech.
In some cases you can have preference between Ionic or Doric dialect.
Kind regards

Good Paul, we are tied, good match! ....But I dont know Stefanus stature? :? ... Dont worry it would be fun!...

400m...hmmm! I have to work a lot! .... Perhaps my armour would not fit me at the event and after  [/quote]

Tied for the inches, but I suspect I'm giving you a few years! What the hell! It was the old farts who held the Persians at Thermopylae ( but then, running was not required...)

The enemy is less likely to get wind of an advance of cavalry, if the orders for march were passed from mouth to mouth rather than announced by voice of herald, or public notice. Xenophon

Cool! What's the Classical Greek for "Come and have a go if you think you're hard enough"?

The first link depicts exactly what we are trying to recreate Comerus.
Though I consider it heavy category.
Medium category could be helmet, shield, chiton only.
Since there will be minors and we do not want unecessary fuss we
cannot do the Light category: helmet, shield and NO chiton!!!
Kind regards

By the Gods Cristina, a Spartan stichiarxos (=modern sargend) would love to divize something like that to torture helpless ephoivoi during training!
Any one managing a quarter of a mile in such fashion as you suggested deserves the rest of the day off!!!

Now I wish I could attend. I run the 400 meter dash in track. Oh, how fun it would be to go and to be able to compete in such an event, too! I've been itching for a race since season was out last year. I'll be in shape from next season, by the time the event rolls around, as well!

Sad

Oh, well. Another year, perhaps!

If this event is successful, there should be another one next year. This will give you time to train IN ARMOUR. And, if the event is successful, there should be no problem funding prizes again.
