Ancient Greek Music
#1
Khairete,
I found a couple of sites...one from Ioannidis Nikolaos
[url:2fl53y86]http://homoecumenicus.com/ioannidis_music_ancient_greeks.htm which has some short soundclips...and sibling site links...if you scroll to the page bottom.
Sing, O goddess,
the perilous wrath of Peleus' son Achilles,
that brought countless ills upon the Achaeans
and many brave souls sent to Hades,
and many heroes yielded a prey
to dogs and vultures,
for so was Zeus' will fulfilled.
Start from the day on which (Agamemnon)
the son of Atreus, king of men, and great Achilles
first fell out with one another.

IOANNIDIS NIKOLAOS
[url:2fl53y86]http://www.oeaw.ac.at/kal/sh/ has a little singing of Demodokos...
[url:2fl53y86]http://www.oeaw.ac.at/kal/agm/index.htm which has some midi clips of arrangement ideas.

Philip said that the Athenians were like the bust of Hermes: all mouth and dick.

You can attempt to Google "DAEMONIA NYMPHE".
They play music with reconstructed Greek instruments.
Kind regards

A question regards ancient music.
Music cannot, of course, be reduced to the physical sounds emitted by reconstructed intruments but it includes phrasing, dynamics, accents... Is there any clue regards the SOUND of ancient music? (e.g. the sound an electric guitar can emit versus the SOUND of a B.B.King)

Khairete,
that is something I always wonder about...a lot of ancient music is very, I don't know how to discribe it, 'disjointed' sounding...given the instruments and the modern ear...that is how it is interpretated.
Of course, some interpretation is based on the traditional folk music of the region, which in a lot of cases is descended from medieval or earlier.
How do we know that the actual music of the ancient Greeks and Romans was not very lively and bouncy....they may have jumped around like modern teenagers in a 'mosh pit' at times....very unlikely, I know
It is very difficult for ourselves, having access to all sorts of music, to wipe out around 2,000 years of 'hearing' and to put ourselves into a different frame of mind of someone who lived in a totally different world.
I know hearing the sound of some of those early interpretations give me goosebumps, maybe that is indicative of a 'regressive memory'...

Well, there was destinction between decent and indecent dances.
Herodo speaks of a guy named Hippoklides who danced at a party of his futre father-in-law amking the old man say to him: "with your dance you kicked the wedding goodby" and the disorderly suitor replied: OU FRONTIS HIPPOKLEDIS = Hippokedes doesn´t care!
An example of indecent dance was KODRAX.
The webpage of the reconstructed instruments groop is:
http://groups.msn.com/DaemoniaNymphe .
Perhaps Cristina and Godfredo find their answer there.
Kind regards
Stefanos

Khairete Stefanos,
[url:1blc3y8x]http://groups.msn.com/DaemoniaNymphe link didn't work, but I found the site...[url:1blc3y8x]http://groups.msn.com/DaemoniaNymphe/homepage.msnw
I love their music....Hymn to Bacchus would have been a good theme for 'Alexander' Big Grin
Although it is 'modern' taste I suppose, I can't see why ancient musicians could not have played in that way.....
I have a favourite 'band' (which is mainly a female singer called Andrea) who went by the name of Hagalaz Runedance, the music is modern Viking/Pagan folk with a mix of authentic instruments and modern,

which is not dissimilar in some respects. Her style has changed somewhat now..[url:1blc3y8x]http://www.nebelhexe.com/index.php?section=music

Well Cristina,
I originally found "DaemoniaNymphe" in the NEO-FOLK or NEO-VOLK listings.
I liked the link. SERENADE OF THE LAST WOLF was possibly written for me!
Guess I became a neofolk fun in my old age.
If you like it atmospharic I suggest try "Silvershade Lynx". They have similar style to "nebelxexe"
Kind regards.

Khairete,
I can't find Silvershade Lynx, except a track on an album by 'Nest'....from Finland.
[url:2ffqvy32]http://koti.mbnet.fi/atolonen/nest/ that is a beautiful drawing...I love lynxs
MP3 downloads on here [url:2ffqvy32]http://www.mikseri.net/artists/?id=23250 rather reminiscant of Medwyn Goodall and Gothic and ancient places...
The lyrics of 'Serenade of the last Wolf' make me very sad...

We will have music at the Ancient Greek Festival from a French group who have worked up some tunes from surviving fragments. Whether said fragments gave any indication of the music's rhythm or tempo, i don't know; if you come to the Festival, Goffredo, you can ask Serge and his band. I think I'll try inviting the Nymphs, Stefanos!
