Alexander again?
#1
Khairete,
I just found this on the Museum of Sparta site...isn't that Alexander with the 16 point Argead star behind him - it does not mention him ?

It does look Alexandrian, and many of hellenistic or alexandrian mosaic resemblance him very much...

But it could be god Hellios or Appollonos( Apollos) or a new deity...
perhaps Stefanus know better..

Also some represent Seasons or sort of nature...

Also for example ther is one wich represent the proper city Alexandria.

Also in time the Catolic church copy that aura or sun behind the head, and put it in saints apostle & Jesus etc...

Actually, no one has ever convincingly shown that the "star of Vergina" is a star. In fact, there is a lot of evidence that the heraldic symbol of the Argeads was in fact the sun, and the illustration above can, therefore, be both Alexander and the sun. The main argument that a sixteen-pointed "star" is in fact a sun is the coinage of Uranopolis, founded in 316 by Cassander's younger brother Alexarchos Helios; here, the star can only be a sun. (Illustrations in Morkholm, Early Hellenistic Coinage, 1991 #60, fig.75)

Here's a summary of other evidence that connects the Sun to the Argeads:
  • Hdt. 8.137: the Sun as protector of the Argead house
Plut. Mor. 180b: Alexander likening himself to the Sun
Alexander's custom to sacrifice to the sun (e.g., after Hydaspes)
Philostratus, Life of Apollonius 2.43 (altar dedicated to the Sun)
Arrian, Anabasis 7.16.6; Appian, Civil Wars 2.153: Alexander supposed not to see the setting sun
There is more, but this is what I remember.

Hey, Jona,

I can definitely get you a shield! They should be available commercially from January. Either we can send you one, or you can collect it at the Festival. - unless you want to come over for the re-enactors' market in February...

Hi Comerus,

I am astonished what a good painter You are and even Charles V.'s cuirass looks correct; did you make Your drawing after this figure of Andrea Miniaturas, omitting the textile parts of the armour?

Sorry to the others, this reply is a bit off-topic.

Yes, I can see what you mean. I liked the helm he wore in the film which is based on the covered ears version.
Just found this.....what do you think? [url:19tx80w6]http://www.instoneinc.com//gallery/Alexander%20the%20Great-O.jpg[/url] It's cigar label artwork...

The image is of Apollo as "Sun Victorious"
Solar sumbols are definitly identified in the hoplite shields from the Archaic Era. The star is not a Star but the Sun. In classical era it ususaly is shown with 8 rays but in the hellenistic period with 16 rays. Bronze age seals and pottery fron Doris has both depictions. So you see it is quite old.
Possibly Alexander offered shields with the sun silvered to his Hypaspists hense in the Successors period they were known as "Argyraspides" literally "silvershields"
Kind regards

Khairete,
so would the general opinion be that the mosaic does portray Alexander as Apollo?
Alexander as a son of Zeus would have represented Apollo, the son of Zeus by Leto, his sister Cleopatra, would have been Artemis.
Ammon 'the hidden one' later incorporated into Amen Ra, the sun god.
