Well it is sadly true that the wierd (to say the least) experimentations of some humans have produced some "offspring" that usually did not survive infancy.
The legent of the Kentavres though apears after humans mustered the art of horse riding. The Kentavros representing the perfect combination of the mounted fighter. Most of them describe in the legend as drunkards and abductors even poisoners. Some as teachers. Anybody recalling certain medieval knights behaving like that? Also fostering was like a type of education some times -Heiron teacher of most Greek heroes!
In the legend the Lapithae killed them after they tried to carryoff the bride of Perithus. Possibly a poetic way to say how the "knightly" order lost its feudal privileges with intoduction of the phalanx.
As symbol did not brought lack to those who carried it.
The hoplites of Iolkos (Kentavros on shield) lost to the hoplites of Trikki (wolf on shield). They also suffered the heaviest casualties fighting agains the Phokeans.
The Italian amored division Chentauro was destroyed by the Greek artillery in Nov. 1940 trying to cross the Kalamas river.
Was Kentavros also the symbol of the British armored unit that was destroyed by Wittman's battle group in Villiers-Bogaze?

as much as I believe that some myths and legends are based on fact, I also think that Centaurs were probably skilled horse archers who appeared to be a blending of man and horse....

I am inclined to agree with you that possibly the first horsemen were horse archers. Heiron is also refered a bow teacher.
The Legend of Hercules and Diomedes horses is possibly explaining the mastering of horse riding as opposed to chariot riding by the Doreans.
The Kentavros tank by the Marines is clear. The same tank was used by the Greek Army in the Civil War 1946-1949.
I have read somewhere that the Kentavros was the emblem of London County Yeomanry.

Talking about Centaurs, has anyone else seen Narnia....?
Oreius and the other centaurs were rather impressive to watch....!

From the special effects perspective - yes. Very impressive battle scenes and great costumes. Occasional blips, but nothing that mars the film.
From the pictures - ditto. Very well done and coherent.
From the scripting - it could be better.
It's the Disney perception of epic, which means not very. Sometimes that's a welcome break from the LOTR-style visuals, but I found it a little too 'twee'.
edit: I should mention that almost all the armour in it is ridiculuous. That goes without saying, I'm afraid.

Andy, trash art existed at all time I think.
Christina, the cap looks like skythian but the ears uncoverd (even Kentavr ears) make me think it is the summer version of Thrakian pilos
