Beggining Reenacting
#16
It depends on what experience you want, if you want to be scared, or cold, or feel like the real soldiers felt then I would say WWI and WWII are wonderful for the 'complete experience' everything is there except the real ammo. civil war is also good if you are in a good unit, for the 'immersion' type stuff.

for just living history immersion i.e. real life barracks life- 1870's-1910 U.S. army is best. there is us boys here the 'boys of '98' representing the Ft. wayne detroit garrison in 1897-1903.

for roman 9 times out of 10 you get a more public oriented, or choreographed non-immersion feel. but that is only in general.

Aedon gives good advice- 11th panzer is a really great group, also try 3 FOLGORE or 2nd NEMBO for WWII italian (PM me for more info), or 193rd rifles on east coast 39th or 124th guards in midwest for russian.

if you like to educate the public, roman is a big one, or civil war, or some gilded age impressions, you will also do this in other time periods though, it all depends on your focus and approach.

ideally you should tell everyone where you are located roughly, at least country and region, then we may respond with units better for you.

Khaire Flavius,

Actually, I have considerable amounts of WW2 era 7.92mm FMJ ammunition. It is really corrosive and the primer seems a bit touchy, but otherwise good and I shoot it now and again.

I mean during tacticals and events, hopefully you dont mean you shoot it during tacticals Confusedhock:

I love shooting my 6.5 carcano, it is really a nice rifle in the 38 moschetto model, good groups and all.

my 91/30, erm, well, lets just say the groups arent measured in inches sometimes.

Khaire Flavius,

Yes, you're right, I don't know of anybody firing live ammo during tacticals! Smile

A 6.5 carcano eh? How is that? I have a 6.5 Swedish Mauser that shoots beautifully. A very handsome rifle too...

I have three Karbine 98Ks that shoot nicely as well. Unfortunately, My Nagant is comparable to your 91/30. I wonder what is with 1891...

Ok, moving the discussion back to ROMAN army talk here...

Gavin, all the advice given to you has been top notch so far. My only small addition is to read as much as you can...figure out a loose plan to follow, and start small. Starting with clothing is probably the best place to begin with, as you can start acquiring basic skills which will come in hand later on if you wish to start bigger projects involving metal.

Also budget yourself! You don't have to lay down $1500 and get outfitted in 4 months. Most people take 1-2 years on average to obtain all their gear. So there is no hurry. But getting the basic kit (Tunic, sandals, belt) can be done fairly quickly, allowing you to participate in events.

Good luck!

sorry matt  we WWII reenactors will carry on for hours.

yes, start slow, for roman you can start with slinger impression etc. for later periods if you dont want to lay out $300 for the rifle do medic for a while.

BTW, carcano is a dream, perfect groups, that 6th round always suprises the allies

Gavin,
I'm on L.I. as well. There aren't any Roman groups on L.I. that I know of but there are a bunch of reenactors of various periods.
I'm putting together an early 1st c. A.D. kit with some friends that I reenact F & I with.

Hey I have another question to add to this, what would be the first piece of clothing I should get for a late period (3rd century?) impression?

As always, a tunic. It is the basic item of clothing for any Roman.
By the way, third century is not exactly late. Late fourth or fifth century would count as late.

If you count from Washington north, there is Legio XX in the DC area, George Metz's Legio XXIV in the PHila/Pa area, and Legio III in New England.
