I suggest you check out this site. Ulrich Schädler has devoted as much study to this topic as anyone, especially with regard to latrunculi. http://www.boardgamesstudies.org/research/notes.shtml

Good luck.

Who has this to say about the other website:

A nicely illustrated site about board games ( http://ablemedia.com/ctcweb/showcase/boardgames.html or http://www.personal.psu.edu/users/w/x/w ... games.html ) created by W. J. Kowalski promises some valuable information, but unfortunately it is – pardon, if I appear unpolite and harsh – completely misleading, because the author relies on second and third hand information and is ignorant of the basic studies to the subject and of the actual state of research.

I collect ancient coins and artifacts, and I can tell you that you can buy real Roman dice! (I don't own a pair yet, though Sad //www.vcoins.com">www.vcoins.com , but check Ebay if you are interested. I hope to own a pair one day! They are very interesting!

Flavia:

Here are two web sites that offer reproductions of Latrunculi. I don't have either, so I cannot vouch for their quality. With the wooden version, I would ignore the rules given. According to the research by Ulrich Schädler, there was no such piece as a dux (or king).

I have a reproduction Latrunculi board and gamepieces, including a leather pouch, available for sale. feel free to e-mail me [email protected] . I will sell it for $40.00 plus S & H. The board is handmade, as are the dux pieces.
