RomanArmy.com has a new look!
#1
I've just finished remodelling the format of RA.com and would appreciate some feedback. Does it seem easier to navigate, more intuitive, about the same, or worse than before?

Do you prefer the new banner, or the old "neon legionary"?

Cheers
Great job! I like this one better than the old one. Especially less buttons which did not load properly anyway. It's 'slimmer', I think. Good banner, too.
Great, guys! Happy you like it better now. The old site was not getting enough of my time, but now that I'm on a two-month vacation ( nyah nyah) there will be more changes and updates.

We do sorely need contributors of material... I'm sure you can see some areas and topics which need covering, such as the Roman army... lol There isn't enough meat to go with the potatoes, I'm afraid.

You like the Bookstore? That's great. I hope people utilize it as a good place to buy books they don't yet have, because we do get the kickback from Amazon.com for every title sold through RA.com. That would help defray the $20/month hosting fee.

If you have other recommendations for (in-print) titles from Amazon.com that we should offer in the Bookstore, please suggest them to me!

Cheers
Must admit that i don´t know what you want for RA.com, so i don´t know if i can offer it.

But, i am working on a list of companies who produce miniatures of ancients (Roman, Greek etc.).
I will see if i also have other titles worth mentioning.
I have had very bad experiences with me writing stuff and if i write something, it is NOT an academic paper and the same high level of Sander. So i don´t think if i can help you with that.
The new banner is a vast improvement on the old style one and much more eyecatching - the only constructive critisism I would offer is that it is maybe a wee bit too 'busy'

The new colour scheme is much easier on the eye

All in all a job well done Now what are you going to do with the other 59 days left?

Venicone, probably I'll be cleaning the house -- it will take at least that long to catch up with what needs doing!

Thank you for the approving words. I can't believe no one has yet asked who's the fellow with the Afro hair-do!

You will soon see that your request for a new banner for Civ Talk has been accomodated; I hope that finds your liking as well although beware, it is even busier than the new one above.

Jeroen, your list of model-makers might find a home in the miscellaneous section, as there is where the interesting but unscholarly stuff is going to accumulate at RA.com. If you were looking for a home for that or others topical resources, we could discuss such an arrangement.

ALL: I am looking for full-scale real life Roman models, in costume, if anyone might be able to send me photos. You might find yourself in a banner someday, or possibly to illustrate a related page of content. And don't forget Jasper's project to collect photos of "soldier models" for our gallery of troop types! In a pinch, well-painted scale models of Roman soldiers would work well for our soldier gallery.

Cheers

P.S. The fiction section of the Bookstore is now finished!

Edited by: JRSCline at: 8/11/03 9:47 pm

I am liking the new change. I like the middle pic in the banner of the large group of troops, Sometimes I look at it and I can just imagine them marching...Might be a neat idea for an animated banner thingy?

And of course you have an Aquila, brownie points from me

Speaking of pictures of soldiers...I may be able to lend my Artist side to provide illustrations?

I am a pencil/pen/black&white artist, but I could do full color work. Not sure what paint media reproduces better online tho. My birds are much better than my humans, but I can work on that ;D

(Might be a good way to kick my butt in gear and get out of my long lull and also get cracking on a similar project for Higgins....)
Thanks Andy! I've sent a message for you to your ezInbox (see upper left of the page).
I enjoy doing the graphics bit, but animating a photo is a bit beyond my level at this point!
Great job, Jenny!
I like a lot the banner,(who is the fellow with the curly hair, he looks like one of those El-Fayum mummy portraits!)
Next September we, the Cohors Prima Gallica will have our festival. Usually we're all engaged and nobody remember that pics should be taken but this time I'll try to get and send some photos of us as late Roman soldiers, off-duty and fully armed.
Greetings,
I read in this section that you are on vacation. I'm envious. When I was presenting my findings and methods on ancient clothing reconstruction at the American Classical League Institute this June, I had very productive meetings with Judith Lynn Sebesta and Norma Goldman; they and Larissa Bonfanti are finishing a publication for students, teachers, and reenactors (and the non-academic public). They asked me and one of my models for permission to use some of our work in their new book, scheduled for a January (APA/AIA Convention) release. Since any images on my website are there to be dragged to the desktop and used (with acknowledgement of course), I offer the same to you.
While the focus of my presentations are not primarily military (and frankly I am embarrassed by the poor quality arms and weapons I got five years ago; I am upgrading now as my budget will allow) any images on the toga, pallium, stola, peplum and palla you wish to use are offered. My legionary outfit mainly functions to show the relationship between the garments worn inside the pomerium and the lore surrounding it and the transitions to life, war, and travel outside the sacred boundary. Most of my shows are about the rites of passage as marked by ritual changes in clothing (toga praetexta to toga virilis with its ceremonies for males and toga praetexta to bridal ritual to stola/palla for females). We are preparing to shoot new photos with the new costumes soon (lighting is always an issue) and should be upgrading the website text commentary and visuals soon as well. Again, any images you might wish are there and if you have any specific requests for individual details, I'll be happy to do what I can.
Enjoy your vacation!
Hi Jasper,
I've finally found out which was the thread on which Jenny asked for soldiers' pics (i.e. this one )
I'll start sending pics of ourselves (Cohors Prima Gallica). Please, tell me if they fulfil what you need.
