I have made a mail and plates eastern type coif but out of mild steel. The coif is from a much later period, XV century, but I also don't like the "too shiny" look of a helmet. So I have used a method to remove rust and that gives a "grey-silvery" color to the steel. It will probably work on brass too but I don't know how the results will look. I have left the metal parts in vinegar vith a little salt added, for 2-4 days, about a teaspoon of salt for 4-6 litters of vinegar.
