RAT Newsletter 19 March 2006
#1
I copy the RAT newsletter here for the members that did not get it for one reason or another.

Hi all!
I realize it's been a very short time since the previous newsletter, but we have some interesting things to tell you about (again)!
For those of you who have never received a RAT newsletter before: you're now enjoying one of the advantages of our new host. The configuration at the new host looks more reliable to all kinds of automated spam control that prevented many members from getting any email at all from RAT. That has now largely been solved.

Now to the real news:
- Jim Bowers (Tarbicus) is continuing his work of summarizing old threads on RAT, picking up the nuggets of gold and putting them into self-contained articles on the main site. The latest is about Repousse work and backings for metal. You can find them in the 'How-to' section at Romanarmy.com: http://www.romanarmy.com/cms/index.php? ... &Itemid=85

- We have finally heard back from Brill, a prestigious academic publishing house. They have decided in favour of our project the Journal for Ancient Military Studies. We expect annual publication starting in 2007. If you have any articles you would like to submit for peer review, send them to me at [email protected] . The JAMS-website will also be constructed at that domain.

- In the same academic vein Christian Koepfer (CaiusTarquitius) has suggested the idea of a Romanarmy.com conference to be organised in Augsburg (Germany) this fall. Keep an eye on this thread if you're interested: http://www.romanarmy.com/rat/viewtopic.php?t=7130

- Some more news related to our move to a new host. As we now have much more storage space available, we have now enabled the possibility for members to upload their own avatar to Romanarmy.com. Go to http://www.romanarmy.com/rat/profile.ph ... sub=avatar to upload your own avatar. Also, I would like to remind members again that they can get storage space for their pictures on Romanarmy.com. Please note, however, that they can only be used on RAT itself.

- We are developing some very modest means to get some money to pay for this more expensive host. If you enjoy Romanarmy.com and RAT, please consider giving a donation ( http://www.romanarmy.com/rat/lwdonate.php - you'll get a medal for any donation of $5 and up!) or getting a t-shirt or mug from the shop ( http://www.romanarmy.com/cms/index.php? ... &Itemid=86 ). Also, we now offer the option for reenactment groups to host their website on a subdomain of Romanarmy.com. Contact me to find out more.

- Finally, as many members have already noticed, Deepeeka has joined RAT, expressing the desire to improve their products. There's now a new subforum ( http://www.romanarmy.com/rat/viewforum.php?f=41 ) to discuss Deepeeka-items in. With the consumerguide ( http://www.romanarmy.com/cms/index.php? ... &Itemid=78 ) still in a nascent state, we struck a deal with Deepeeka: a member of RAT will write a proper review of a Deepeeka item, giving them all the feedback they need to improve the product, possibly in a feedback cycle. That feedback will have to include not only comments on workmanship and materials, but also an account of the historical accuracy with references to academic literature and preferably photographs. The review of the final product will be published in Romanarmy.com's Consumerguide and the reviewer will get the new, improved item for free, courtesy of Deepeeka!
So: who has a deepeeka pilum, access to academic literature on the actual artifact, a talent for writing reviews and a digital camera?
Contact me if you're interested!

That's all, for now...

See you all on RAT!
