General late period Roman troop impressions:

& our .pdf kit guide:

& the Holderness germanic migration period guide:
www.historicalweaponsandarmour.co.uk/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=35
For a germanic impression, I would think a spangenhelm like the Hofburg, Vienna example would look good, or this type:
[url:344lxq5o]http://www.comitatus.net/arms-photos/arms-4.JPG[/url]
which I believe was modelled on one from Southern France in the 5thC, possibly Visigothic?
Personally I'd avoid scale armour. I think some 5thC sword examples had straight lower guards & either similar upper guards or small pommels would look right, perhaps with an hexagonal grip.
I'd be interested in your thinking on this - keep us posted.
cheers

Hi Cesar,
Well, you know Fectio website I think, even though I can´t compete with the site of Comitatus any longer!! (Great job folks!), but you a good source for images in the forum of the Herculiani: 111935.aceboard.fr/index.php?login=111935&rub=

Aha! Glad I finally found this thread.
This seems like the best place for my 5th century kit questions.
I'll probably also cross-post in applicable equipment specific threads.
I have been erratically studying 5th century impression info, have collected much, but need more time to sift through & compile everything. Hope to finish first rough draft in about five weeks.

After opening the door & giving invitations yesterday, I learned today that I must semi-withdraw from RAT, Roman Reenactment activities, etc. Still, I thank G-d to be above ground. May you blossom, wherever you are planted. Pax et bonum, + r

Good luck and keep above ground as long as possible, Restitutus!
Ivan,
That's the million euro question... :? For infantry, we have only some poorly published low hobnailed shoes from York (On the 'Small Finds' volume of the York series) For cavalry/guards we have only artistic depictions (silver and ivory relieves, later mosaics and paintings) of very open and light campagi.

It\'s all an accident, an accident of hands. Mine, others, all without mind, from one extreme to another, but neither works nor will ever.

So how would you you classify the Cuijck and Deurne shoes, then?

Robert,
I would term them just 'open' campagi, in view of those 'very open' ones depicted later...

So your campagi would suit for the 5th century Aitor?

Ivan,
Strictly speaking... no
But you know that the people in my group are shamelessly wearing third century eyelet boots and nobody seems to make a scandal out of it...

Ivan,
It is a relevant pic for me. At last I could have a photo in front of the Deurne findspot!
Eeerr, say around 20 kg less...
