Massive gathering in Germania in 2009

Ok gentlemen, now i ve the time to get in medias res again.

Lets do it like this:

Who is willingly and able to do in organisation team for a big event in 2009?

I would like to do so and would make the contacts in germany and would search the location.


Which groups or parts of groups would be willing to take part? (Just the will is asked, not the prices right now, that will be done later)

My impress is to get to a thematic comes closer to the background of roman reenactment.
We have less augusteian time reenacter and only some "enemies" but a hugh mass ´of mid-end first century reenacters of legion and auxilia.
So the 1950s day of the batavian revolt would be a good background for them, parallel to the varian battle.
So it would be a great multiperiod event, but with programm by periods.
Would this find agreement in the groups?

I've a question: why doing a big (the biggest?) roman event (are we on Roman Army Talk, or not?), in the location (Kalkriese) of one of the worst disaster for the roman Army? Even if for a general "comfort" to organize there, I really don't see why. Unless it's a memorial ceremony. But if it's a ceremony for the killed in battle roman soldiers, please no mock battles, nor "barbarians"... :?

The location dont have to be Kalkriese. Kalkriese is just obe possibility, connecting to the background of "2000s annual of the varian battle".

There are other possibilities, like the fights against the Batavians around Bonn, which would speech for the location Bonn, or the victory of Rigomagus, which would fit to location Remagen, or the fights around Vetera which would be Xanten, and also Augusta Treverorum, so Trier would be possibly with the background of 69 AD. So the 1940s annual of that (and by the way a lovly possibility to show german another point of roman-german history than Varus).

The late romans have the Julian peace of Mogontiacum in the year 359 (uh do i remember right?), after the fights against germans.


So there are enough dates to celebrade in 2009 than only Varus, also his annual is already the "roundest".

If we were to do something like this at the Kalkreise site, which would probably briung in financial support, etc for the museum, and might be a real good media event, on thing that could be very helpful to the re-enactors would be.....

Have shields provided by the site, maybe not as sturdy as the originals, but all the same pattern, and same designs and colors. This would 1. make reenactors not have to ship their shields, by train, bus or airplane, and 2 give a cohesion to the units, so that they all look like part of one army and one legion.

Get BBC and various film organization involved, they'll be able to get authentic archival footage, with hamata instead of segmentata for their early Roman docu-dramas.... Imagine that!

People should organize the biggest roman re-enactment event of the world based on Varusschlacht 9 AD because, I think, this is the most famous roman military historical event known by the 'civilians' - eg. non re-enactors or simply the public.
OK maybe the siege of Jerusalem and the torching of the temple is similarly famous but re-enacting it would be a bit difficult I think.

It was founded by Drusus, Tiberius' brother, that built there the castellum Drusi military camp on the Limes. So it could fit any period from the Julio-Claudians to the second Flavians, till to the famous Iulianus' victory vs. Alamans. It was destroyed in 451 by Attila, therefore the great migrations fans will be glad too... Good geographic position for anyone, BIG event for everybody! :wink:

I really hope so. So, i will start now collection possibilities and ask museums for their interest in it.

Strassbourg (but this would be 357 if i remember right, so not anniversary bonus).
