Bishop & Coulston RME available!
#31
Quote:I just spoke to Oxbow UK to check the status of my order, and they expect it to be available to process and send within the week.

I'm getting very confused here as the parts of Oxbow to which I am speaking (them as ought to know as opposed to them as thinks they do) are expecting it to arrive in the next few days (ie it hasn't yet materialised in Oxford). So has it arrived in the warehouse and they haven't told the main shop? Has somebody been telling porky pies and what they thought was B&C2 was in fact something else? Is Elvis the mysterious (unnamed and very much alive) third writer and directly descended from Mary Magdalene? Do we really know (or even care!)? Meanwhile the market price of B&C1s is plumetting even faster than that of Guttmann helmets; next thing you know they'll be selling them by the wheelbarrow load on Ebay. Tune in tomorrow for the next exciting episode of... (Flying) Pigs In Space!

I have just heard that B&C1 was in fact a fake Confusedhock:

Apparently decendents of the Knights Templar ( namely Simon ) did it as a hoax. A planned follow up in colour ( fully illustrated with tunics !) was foiled by the issue of B&C2!

Just to add to the kerfluffle I unintentionally stirred...

Just got a note from David Brown, confirming that the books had indeed arrived in the UK, but that it will take 3-4 weeks for them to be put into a surface shipment bound for the US, which is why the late May estimate is being given.

He also noted I would be getting a 20% discount on the $40 list price, but didn't specify that this is for RAT members only.

Beginning to think I should take my "highly placed source" out back somewhere for a thorough beating with a rudiis...

Is this the famous, hard to find and when you do, it costs hundreds of dollars, bible of roman weapons that I hear everyone talk about? Confusedhock:

This is it:

But, Bishop and Coulston II may become the next bible of roman weapons.

Thanks, I don't know any thing about the book they're talking about :?

How does this one differ from The armour of imperial Rome?

More like the Judas gospel, some might say.

The entire theory that the Romans had military equipment and weapons is not an original idea at all ! This whole subject must has been copied from that much older book, I believe by two authors called Coulston and Bishop. I expect this whole case will be dragged up in the law courts quite soon thus ensuring sales of both books will rocket and it won't harm the forthcoming movie either!

Okay, I'm convinced, it exists: I've seen a couple of copies.

Now is as good a time as any to point out that three members of RAT have made important contributions to the volume.

Andy Brozyna designed the cover for us (and with this edition we have one of which we are proud, rather than that of the first which just made us go 'eh?' because it contained so many curious design decisions).

Jim Bowers produced a digital reconstruction for the colour plate section of an early 2nd-century AD legionary to our specification that looked thoroughly unpleasant.

A third member (a lurker who shall remain anonymous: he knows who he is;-) very kindly allowed us to use colour photos of some particularly interesting items.

I can't help but feel the book is better than it might have been thanks to the contributions of these three.

So get 'em while they're hot 'cos there won't be a B&C3! If you find glitches, typos, or any other cock-ups (it's a technical printing term and not nearly as rude as you might think) let me know and I'll put the corrections on the book's web site.

I just received a message from Oxbowbooks that the RME2 is available for shipping. I gave my updated credit-card details (I have been pre-ordering for a long, long time....). Is this really happening  ?
