Channel 4 on Helen and Homeric makeup
#1
I just saw this article about Homeric Greek makeup, (ok, a bit early for us) and a Channel 4 show on Helen of Troy. Seems like they put a lot of research into the makeup and clothing (note the bronze mirror), though I can't tell if they really did the open bodice look. Anyone seen this show?

Actually it is Minoan decolteu. It exists only in a small idol said to depict the earth goddes or one of her priestesses.
Mycenean frescoes don't show bare-brasted ladies.
Sorry to disappoint you FAVENTIANVS but the image is "accurate" as far as it goes for bronze age Spartan queen.

Kind regards

Greetings,
that is an amazing reconstruction....
I just realised something else... some long skirts in a local store keep catching my eye, and have just realised why they looked familiar.....!
I love the hippy hairstyle  ....I will attempt similar make up and hair for Watford...although being more mature, will probably look like a lady of the street....
Oh daminit...wrong time period....
You know, the ideal of what makes a beautiful women changes so much over time, that seeing some ancient women would scare the life out of a modern man!
It is also interesting just how long the white lead powdered face with the red lips was fashionable for. It stretches from the time of Helen of Troy, through the Roman, into the Medieval period, was a trademark of Elizabeth I and after a short time being banished by the Puritan sorts, made a comeback in the 17th/18th centuries - complete with 'beauty spots'....It was only the Victorian period that made 'plain and natural women' mean 'respectable' and the 1940's that bought the 'tanned and bronzed' modern look that banished the 'we are not peasants so have white faces' ideal...

The enemy is less likely to get wind of an advance of cavalry, if the orders for march were passed from mouth to mouth rather than announced by voice of herald, or public notice. Xenophon
