"Decline and fall of the Roman myth"
#46
They finally aired the series here on the History Channel. What garbage :!: It's just as bad as Jone's "Crusades." Every commercial promoting the series touts "Restoring Barbarian reputations one viewer at a time" when it should have said "Trashing Romans one century at a time" This was revisionism at its worst. But everything about it has been said by now and it's all true.

And why do they keep hiring Jone's, a clown who delves into history when he's not satirizing it ?

BTW, anyone notice Peter Weller on the History Channel lately ? I had no idea he was an historian as well as an actor. Robocop's a welcome addition :-) ) He actually seems to know what he's talking about.

Specifically the Sasanian Persians were far more advanced than current historical prejudice has given them credit for:

"Eberhard Sauer, of the University of Edinburgh's School of History, Classics and Archaeology, said: “Our project challenges the traditional Euro-centric world view. At the time, when the Western Roman Empire was collapsing and even the Eastern Roman Empire was under great external pressure, the Sasanian Persian Empire mustered the manpower to build and garrison a monument of greater scale than anything comparable in the west. The Persians seem to match, or more than match, their late Roman rivals in army strength, organisational skills, engineering and water management.â€
