Pictures of 3rd - 5th century helmets
#1
Ave!

Does anyone have pictures or links to pictures of actual helmets from this time period? Museum photos, auctions, etc?

I'm trying to figure out what my next helmet will be and I don't want to base it on Deepaka's site. Wink

The Roman Numismatic Gallery site has several pages of original Roman helmets, including these later models:

Niederbieber-type helmets

Ridge-type helmets/ spangenhelms

The second page includes the 'new' (i.e recently publicised) 'Christies' early ridge helmet, dated (by RAT members!) to the late 3rd or very early 4th century. The 'Buch' helmet on the first page dates to around 260AD.

Robert,

A question if you will. In Professor Kocsis's article does he give an approximate dating for the Hétény helmet?

Thanks,

Todd, should you wish to save time making a helmet, we offer a great reconstruction of the Deir el Medineh spangenhelm.

Late third/early fourth Century.
