The earliest finds of lorica segmentata parts date to the late first century BC, and are of the Kalkriese type. The Corbridge styles were in use by 43 AD (the invasion of Britain). The latest known pieces seem to come from around 300 AD, as I recall.

Remember that although we do think of the look you describe as "typical", many legionaries were wearing mail or scale armor right through this period, and there is still much debate about colors, of course.

There is also a HUGE long discussion somewhere on this board (and similar ones on other boards!) about WHY the lorica segmentata was developed and why it ultimately disappeared. In short, we don't know! All we can do is speculate. (Can anyone dig up that old discussion so we don't have to discuss it all again?)

For the rest of the items you mention, large shields and short swords go back to Romulus' time, though for much of the 2nd and 1st centuries BC the longer gladius hispaniensis was also in use. The pilum also has a long history, in several different forms. Of course, the details of any piece of gear changed over the centuries, so you wouldn't see a first-century scutum back in the 8th century BC.

Don't worry about asking questions! Sometimes they might simply be too huge or complex to tackle on a board like this. You can find out a lot about lorica segmentata in the books on that subject by MC Bishop and Mike Thomas, for instance.

Oh, can you please spell out all your words rather than using "text messaging" abbreviations? They are hard for me to read, and must be even harder for folks who don't speak English as a first language. Thanks!

Cur grammaticam malam talem cogitabam utebatur!
Even some us native English speakers are having difficulty with this. I haven't gotten into text messenging which appears to have a structure all its own. I'll have to ask my teenage daughter to translate.

Francis, exercise some patience before asking for the same thing twice. Have you tried using this board's search function? Go here: http://www.romanarmy.com/rat/search.php
You'll find it's ridiculously easy & fast and digs up enormous amounts of cool info.

That's the trouble, you have to figure out the right words in a post to find it. Try different combinations with lorica segmentata?
