Paul, have you got Itunes?

There's a fantastic CD called Music of Upper & Lower Egypt [LIVE], recorded by Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead during his travels. Reviewed on Amazon:

Quote:If you have an interest in historical and cultural music, especially that of Africa buy this CD. It may very well represent the closest music to that of ancient Egypt outside of the Copts. However, if you are looking for belly dance music, you may be somewhat disappointed. I just wish I could find more music from around the Sudan...

One track should have the crowd nodding and clapping, called Nugumi. And as it's Egyptian it definitely has a link with Rome in at least a roundabout way. See if you can find a sample on the internet.

Salve Paul,

Just check this thread

http://www.romanarmy.com/rat/viewtopic.php?t=7452

There the topic of Roman music is discussed widely. I have the following CDs of the following groups at home:

* Synaulia (also used by Marcus Junkelmann at his gladiator shows, I guess Martin could tell us more about that *wink*)
* Musica Romana
* David Marschall "Somnia Imperii"

Vale optime,

If you use the first link of Iulia Cassia Vegetia's post then this will lead you to amazon.com.

Or I tried entering "synaulia" at the amazon.co.uk page and it got these results:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/sea ... s=synaulia

I haven't checked yet if they have both.

If you wanna have our CD of "Musica Romana", I can send you one to US.

But it will be soon availible trough German Amazon as well in some weeks.

By the way, we also play for Junkelmann...for example in Xanten in the Archaeological Park (but I do not know if that is a musically reference).
:lol: Big Grin

Depends how authentic you want it!?

Normally cornu (g-formed horn), tuba (fanfare horn) and hydraulis (water organ), tibia
(double-reed pipe) and utricularium (roman form of a bagpipe) was played.
So...if you find a good cornu-player and a best also a drummer...you can have somehhing "live".
