Possibly as a 'sword-biter'. (?)

In a knife fight or defending against a blow from a sword, it can be used to parry and possibly twist, and either break the blade or disarm the opponent.

The other alternative is that it is for getting boy scouts out of horses hooves! Smile

Beautiful work Avitianvs!

Hello!

Simancas knifes were mostly for cinegetic (hunting) use, not for war.

And, as Faventianus notes, the notch is for place a finger. The knife have a very little guard. It's very little, 20 cm or so the whole thing.

Is the shape related at all to this scabbard from (IIRC) the Numantine Museum in Spain?

Yes it is. There are a lot of exemplars, someones with opus interrasile decoration (like the photo ones), some plainer.

Aitor Iriarte have a very beautiful reproduction of one of the more decorated versions.
