Poll: what roman movie should you like to see made?
#46
Yeah, I said it once before and totally agree that a roman flick on the Jewish war with Josephus as central figure would be perfect. The roman and war stuff would be fun for us but the story would also be of universal appeal. Josephus was a very interesting man; his story is very modern and would make for great arguments [was he a traitor or not].
What were some of the greatest challenges you faced making this film?

Stylistically, the biggest challenge was to make Rome come alive for the viewer. As I read the primary material, I heard intimate, immediate voices in my head and I wanted the film to convey that impression visually, too. I didn't want Rome to look distant and long gone; I didn't want to show broken columns lying in a row in the Roman forum with modern structures in the background. So really that was a big challenge: how do you make ancient Rome look as vibrant as it sounds? Lyn Goldfarb and I scoured the region that was once ruled by Rome in search of the most intact archeological sites in which to film. Some ancient tragedies turned out to be great boons for us. Most spectacularly, Mt. Vesuvius buried several cities and preserved them in breathtaking detail. The resort town of Pompeii, for example, stands almost completely intact. And this is important because the town includes domestic buildings â€â€Â

These film clips come from a Russian language film called Dacy (Даки).
it is available from RussianDVd.com. I picked up a copy of the videotape in Ukraine, but there are no sub-titles, so unless you understand Russian language, you might just have to watch the pictures.

Quote:I could see Hanks as Caesar, though I don't think he'd be best. Patrick Stuart would be great. I think Harrison Ford would be good too, though I appear to have a much higher opinion of him than most do.
I'd rather like to see Harrison Ford playing Traianus (if they ever made a movie about him), but for Caesar Ralph or Joseph Finess could be a good choice.

Yes, Tom Sizemore would make an excellent centurion or optio (he was also in "Pearl Harbour").
Tom Sizemore and R Lee Ermey as your optio/centurian. joe pesci, Robert dinero.... not really knowing how old dinero is I think he might be able to pull off doing a decent Caesar understandably that his is older than caesar was at alesia....

I would like to see dinero as caesar at alesia ( would prefer the whole gallic wars ) there thats my vote

Quote:Roman movies would show the vile Caratacus as a terrorist and murderer who continually (shades of Osama bin Ladin) fought against civilization and staged banditry raids, and coerced the weaker people to hide him from justice, until the brave Cartimandua got rid of her traitorous husband (who was secretly helping the terrorist band) and with the help of her brave, handsome, and loyal standard bearer caught the vile murderer in a trap and turned him over to justice. Then the wily criminal pleads for his life in court and joins the Roman government as a happy guest on a pension because the Roman government was merciful even to terrorists, if they admitted their evil ways and repented.
Actually there were movies done in Italy during the 60's using Mostly Italian / European actors but for whatever reason would use an actor from usa. ( the only ones I can think about now have steve reeves ) I dont know if its a studio thing to get international appeal so that it can be distributed anywhere with at least some actors being recognised. I have seen many fine movies in europe with excellent actors, So I am thinking it more of an acceptance in usa by having a familiar face in it. as far as american actor being caesar - Caesar had a presence not anyone can portray Caesar. you need someone who can have a powerful personality that will come across the screen ...... ok Caesar had his legionaries follow him anywhere do anything simply because he was caesar. i think while watching the film it would be important to get this feeling while you are watching the film.

Speaking of Italian and Italo-American actors I could imagine Nanni Moretti (without the beard) as Tiberius and Robert Loggia as Cicero.

Something about the Jewish War? Maybe too sensitive, but the siege of Jotapata or Jerusalem would be spectacular.

Or the Year of the Four Emperors? That bit in Tacitus about the legionary killing his own father during the Second Battle of Cremona was just made for a movie.
