Patera Decoration

I am building a reproduction patera and I would like to get some ideas on how to decorate the handle.

Since this would be a common soldiers patera I would like to do something simple. So any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have seen only one that has been decorated, and it was pretty straight forward and simple. Cut into the handle was the soldiers legion number. This was a reporduction and not a historical find.
