a roman legionary would win against a samurai whether in battle or in single combat, roman fight tactics are just superior
ex. gladius and scutum vs katana or any other japanese weapon for that matter....no contest

when is comes down to it a short sword and shield is going to defeat just about any other combination of weapons

highly trained men with easy to use d weapons and tactics are going to win against highly train men with hard to master weapons and tactics everytime

back to Samurai in leather armour. I was always under the impression that the samurai armour was a combination of metal and leather -> metal parts for protection at the vital parts, the rest leather but that it wasn't a metal armour decorated by leather.

(bit off-topic but have you read the book by Stephen Turnbull about the ninja)

the book on shinobi by Stephen is very good indeed!

you are partly correct in that the older yoroi types sometimes did have leather lacing, but the samurai found out quickly that silk lacing performed much better. the printed leather (egawa) was always attached as decoration, never for strength.

i really liked the story about those 2 samurai who sneaked up into a castle and when they were in the courtyard, they started to yell their names/ ancestors etc. or the story about a group a samurai who sneaked into a castle and when they were discovered they claimed to be a special group who was searching for intruders!

Another book i really like was the book about the korean invasion! Kato Kyomasa rules!

That is not entirely correct.

Now I admit I am "nit picking" here, however...

In Turnbull's book, The Samurai A Military History (page 194 for those of you with a copy of the book) there is a photo of a special suit of armor made of cowhide owned by Tokugawa Ieyasu.

The caption goes on to say:

"He is traditionally supposed to have had this unusual armour made as a reply to a taunt from Hideyoshi referring to him as 'The cow of the Kanto,' an allusion to the country provinces which Ieyasu received after the fall of the Hojo."

The armor is now in the Tokugawa Art Museum in Nagoya.

Of course, this is the exception that proves the rule. I do not have a photo to upload, but I will bet that with your resources M.VIB.M you do.

Correct me if im wrong but didnt the Dacians use a similar weapon to that of the katana against the Romans: the falx. I remember it from Rome: Total War. a falx is not entirly the same as a naginata. The blade of a flax is bend forward, that of a naginata is bend backwards. A flax is more of a slashing weapon (great if you want to cut of some arms etc.)

This is kinda off the wall but...

Does anyone know the origin the name Hamatake? I have a friend who is japanese and he is trying to track down it's origins. He knows that it is the "beach warrior" variety and not the "beach bamboo" variety of the name's possible spelling, but what exactly IS a "beach warrior"?

Any ideas?

The name Hamatake should first be written down in Kanji characters.

If the origins go down to the edo period it may well be a referral to a fight which Musashi Miyamoto had on the beach. if older there might be another reason.

I would like to know his full name. since to check wether one has samurai origins or not is these days quite difficult. Where were his parents born?
which city, and prefecture....

to go into geneaology you need a lot more info than just his last name.

as for the Falx/Naginata....

here is the difference... btw a falx was used for hacking! and slashing.

an Naginata is used for slashing and cutting (as most Japanese weapons)

The Yari was used mainly for piercing.
