Early Thracian Greek helmet
#1
Anyone have good images of an "Early" Thracian helmet along these lines?

I have been trying to find a reproduction of it as well, but the usual armorers online don't seem to showcase them at all. I can just imagine how sweet it would be to be able to wear one of these babies to a reenactment instead of the humdrum (j/k) corinthian we are always used to seeing. Big Grin

Hiya, Mythos. Great to see that you finally chose to join our little forum here at RAT. Wink

If you provide the measures of your head and images and such the armorers may build a helmet at your request.

I have not spent months gathering Hoplites from the four corners of the earth just to let
some Swedish pancake in a purloined panoply lop their lower limbs off!

Few people are as knowledgeable as you when it comes to shield devices and heraldry, Stefanos. Wink

Khaire Mythos,
I think Comerus means Legion XIIII
Macedonian
Greek
They are the Hoplites in both the Macedonian Army and the Spartan videos in this series...

The enemy is less likely to get wind of an advance of cavalry, if the orders for march were passed from mouth to mouth rather than announced by voice of herald, or public notice. Xenophon

I thought Athena herself (at least the statue of Athena in the Parthenon) had a gorgon head on it, thus making it likely that some Athenians themselves would follow suit. Would this be an incorrect interpretation? What would Athenians be most likely to have painted on their shields instead of the gorgon head?

About the Early Thracian, anyone have any images or references for it other than what I could find in my initial post?

I have read through that thread. I see no reason to assume Athenians wouldn't use a gorgon head shield pattern. Confusedhock:

Another reason why you should have been to the Ancient Greek Festival... Stefanos held a short talk on shield devices but I don't remember much of it.

At the time that the "thrakic" helm was adopted in Athens the finaces were at a sorry state and usually the A monogram was all they carried.
There was only one family carying a special type of "gorgoneio" but I am still analysing latest evidence to back it up.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking that at the time the 'A' monogram would have been prevalent. But the gorgon head was always my favorite design, so that's why we used it. Cheers.

So where were they at Watford? They were invited. Perhaps they were ashamed of their fibre-glass shields.

That is highly plausible.
