Jumping way back down to the picture on that hat, Giannis...did you compress the crown part with a narrow string/strap just where the brim starts? I've seen pictures of Boetian helmets and (gasp!) Viking shield bosses that had the same indentation around the end of the domed part.

It looks amazingly like the hats seen in some of the vases and other Greek art. Good job! But please explain how you accomplished that.

That's exactly what i did! I don't have the knowlege and means to work and shape felt,so this trick worked and although i don't believe the originals were done this way,it is barely noticeable and looks right.

No,nobody has a "complete set" available off the shelf yet,and this in a way is good,since it allowes for more variation. But DSC are in a good way,since they have decent helmets,some of the nicest shields,acceptable greaves though admittedly it's the most difficult item for a mass producing manufacturer,and sandals. And more helmets and a sword are at least in the plans.

Here is my 12C Byzantine impression (nods to Tim Dawson) in the field at Armidale this past Easter.

Specifically a native officer in command of a Varangian Guard unit, my little "friend" is the missus

The kit wore well and is particularly protective under a range of combat conditions, weight is about 10kg for Klibanion and skirt so the 10 K or so a day up and down hills wasn't too challenging.

Excellent. With some friends from Comitatus I did a photo shoot last weekend for a forthcoming new book by Timothy, and I suddenly find myself drawn to all things Byzantine. I spent most of the photo shoot in funny hats, showing off hose, playing a drunk, type cast once again. But now I have plans .....

I think that while you always could buy Greek kit "off the shelf" if you knew where to go, now there is more of it and it is to a better standard. "Off the shelf" Roman kit has improved massively over the past five years, and I'm sure Greek and Hellenistic equipment will follow.

It is certainly a long way from what was available just a few years back. Only 'good' helmets were Mannings, from what I could see.

I oiled and painted my sandals. I think they look much better like this.

It is true that the last couble of years there has been quite a development in greek kit. Now the only thing that could help evolve even more the greek equipment would be to have more people doing greek. And more groups for that matter. And more events.
These last helmets by DSC and Al Hamdd,that all together have offered 7 new types of helmets that any of them is much better than the old deepeeka ones,and that are actually planning to do more, hopefully will draw more re-enactors in this era.

I like the sandals, especially without the nails. They will be popular.

We've had a mini heat wave here in yorkshire. I even have sun burn. I've done little but ride horses for weeks. I've even had a chance to do some serious messing about as a Greek.

I don't know exactly how but a member of my group did something like this, and after polishing, he covered the helmet with brass (sorry, don't know the exact word in english for this). This is how it looks now:
