The units are all pretty naf and/or a result of bad history combined with a need to "sex things up" for the kiddy gamers!!
having just bought Vikings-total war, i hope that the game is as good as the rest. In that case i will take less historical part for granted.
Hey,

I know as well that some of the units are a bit - well - questionable. But the building blocks will be there and this will mean is the ability to construct historically correct (for what we know anyway) recreations of ancient battles in full 3-D - motion capture splendor.

That alone will be worth the price. Besides I'm sure that the campaign will be more credible than either Preatorians or Legion - and quite fun to play.
I had resisted buying Medieval TW but having done so this past weekend, I found myself thoroughly impressed with the much greater diversity of units and factions to play.

I can forgive units of gladiators, I suppose, as long as the gameplay is as good as (or better than!) that in M:TW.

A long time ago I offered our collective help to the Creative Assembly team, because I was quite certain that eventually they would make a Rome:TW, but never heard back. And lo, here comes R:TW. Well, maybe in some oblique way I helped, who knows?

RAT members did provide some input to Slitherine Software (who did LEGION), albeit in a limited way, for they had already pretty much put their ideas into code by that point.

I would love, love, love to be in on a Rome-themed game design team. Hear that, all you software developers? Just get me in on the ground floor, not after the fact.

Sure. Particularly since you can desuign your own battles and the game can serve as a fun vehicle of exploration. BTW I heard there is an option to fight the entire battle through the eyes of the commander as opposed to the 1000' level view. That will make C&C interesting.
Have you seen the in-play screenshots on the TW website? I particularly like the one where the elephant is tossing the two legionaries in the air!

Goody, let's make a list of comments about the units in the hope that someone from Creative Assembly is lurking with pen in hand... (Fat chance? Could I win the Lotto instead?)

BEEF #1. If I'm reading correctly, it appears that R:TW will stop at the advent of the Empire, is that correct? If so, why why why are they depicting soldiers in Imperial era armor?

BEEF #2. Imperial legionaries with crests, with... breastplates --- WAAAAH!!!!! OK, crests, maybe on parade. But in battle? Is there any evidence for this? And breastplates for an entire unit??? The horror, the horror!

BEEF #3. Ummm, Spartan hoplites in a Roman game? I thought they went out before Alexander; so is he in this too???

BEEF #4. Cavalrymen in lorica segmentata. In all periods, should be chainmail, or nothing. And no crests, dammit!!!

BEEF #5. Where are the auxiliaries??? They comprised at least half the army's nominal strength and came in many interesting varieties, regular and irregular grade.

Does anyone else have filet mignon?

On the plus side, the graphics rendering looks to die for. If those really are in-game screenshots then I just hope my computer can handle it as I max the settings!

Also, I was surprised to see allusions in website text to what look like proper sources. Blurbs about the "Marian reforms," etc. That's nice and shows the right research efforts have been made, if somewhat inconsistently applied by the graphics artists.

1/ Development of "new technologies" may be player dependant - so there's a distinct possibility that segmentata will be available before the end of the game.

2/ It's OK for officers - I don't recall how much of this there is on the videos tho.

3/ Sparta replaced its hoplites with pikemen 225-220BC, so there is plenty of room for them in this game.

4/ Crests are probably OK, segmentata isn't tho.

5/ Regular auxiliaries are an Imperial institution. Prior to the Empire (well Augustus really) auxiliaries would be equiped in their native fashion, and rarely amount ot as much as half the army. Indeed in many cases armies were 80-90% legions.

Or do you mean Latins? Latin legions were probably identical to Roman ones, and the difference dissappeared after the Social wars of 90 BC-ish.

The two main forums/ web site to get info on RTW are

The Org - www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/...nboard.cgi
Please take note that this forum is not an Ezboard forum..and you will need to register to communicate (BTW I will let you into a little secret- I am a moderator at the ORG and we have a VERY close tie with Creative Assy)

The second one as you are aware is the .COM Forum - pub133.ezboard.com/bshoguntotalwar

Currently MTW (VI) is my favourite game, and I spend alot of my time playing as the Byzantine faction (online and off)

If you would like any info on RTW or MTW then please let me know...

Finally for all the up to date press release visit www.totalwar.com/
...nice to see you here.

But beware - the folks on this board are VERY knowledgable. And, as a result, they expect a historically accurate game. We know that while R:TW will be historically "based" it will take some liberties (a gladiator unit anyone?).

Personally, I'm OK w/ that but some here do not go in for this sort of thing.
You know you are always welcome over on the Imperium forum, and after all, the design there is not so far along that it is impossible to change some of the stuff. Though I expect to hear some really good arguements - historical and game design-wise - before I do make those changes.
Shades... I wonder if they remember me at the .Org. There I was once known as Mariko and played Shogun:TW. Ah, it's been so long I can hardly remember any screen-names. Is Obake still around?

In the early annals of R.A.T. it was recorded that Catiline, Shiro, and Mariko first discussed the idea of a board devoted to nothing but the Roman Army. Being inspired by the .Org, I went out looking for a host, found ezboard, created Roman Army Talk, and the rest is history. Catiline and Shiro were the charter members; you'll see Cat occasionally (he's our chief moderator) and Shiro has since moved on to other things, although he's looked in on us in the years since.

Anyway, that's my TW history. I like the series quite a bit and I believe the research has improved substantially with each game. Perceptions of Rome are, unfortunately, still tainted with "sword and sandals" images of breastplates and crests galore, Russell Crowe, and Zuluesque barbarians. This is our fear, that the evidence will be subsumed to Hollywood misconceptions. R:TW can be SO much better than that, with just a little effort and the right involvement.

If you do have direct access to the CA R:TW project chief, I would appreciate having his contact email (confidentially). I will then put some detailed effort into specific critiques, complete with images and sources for CA's reference.

However, if this collected input has to be sent to a generic postmaster-type address at CA, it's not worth my time to do, because it likely won't be read by the people who should be reading it. Thus, I need the project director's personal email. This is some assurance that the effort invested won't be binned by a CA flunkie, especially considering that the last time we offered help, we were ignored.

Strategy, I have always been a fan of your game project. I hope PAX ROMANA does not steal Imperium's thunder. If there is a specific way I can help, just let me know: jrscline at yahoo.com.
Ah - the good old days at the Org... haven't been there for a very long time either.

Pax Romana actually doesn't worry me in the slightest; partly because I am confident enough in the concepts in Imperium that I'm fairly sure that it will compare well to all it's potential competitors, partly because (unlike the "competition"), I am unfettered by any need to make Imperium commercially viable.

Besides, I'm not likely to get finished by the time Pax Romana gets out - unless they become even more delayed on that game than they already are.

At the moment I'm working on the game editing functionality (got to get the map of Italy done), but at some point during the year I expect to have an alpha version ready and will start looking for some more testers.
