Auxiliary unit in (re-an) action… video clips
#1
Ave omnes,

some more of my clips from the Roman Festival 2004 at Hjemsted Oldtitspark /Denmark.
The Re-enactors are of the Northern German ‘Cohors I Germanorum’ (link from old RAT), joined by fellow ‘Germanics’ group. (The artillery shots you’ll find here’: http://www.romanarmy.com/rat/viewtopic.php?t=10106 )

The show was performed to explain and entertain families, visiting the iron age Park, so sometimes it is funny. I liked this Germanorum show, bringing history ‘to life’. Due to the audience and the small number of actors, don’t expect bloody swordfight or epic battles.

All clips are 640 x 480 (With Tarbicus’ help still working on a solution to shrinking them without losing tot much quality and uploaded here at RAT then, as far as being possible)

Inspection of the unit – the optio (?) seems to have no high opinion on his Germanic brothers in arms at the end of the line

Using the hasta. The officer explained the hasta being more useful regarded as kind of a pugio connected to a 2 meters handle, than as an one way missile.

Drawing gladii in a shield wall formation. The officer points out why the gladius was worn on the right side. First the soldiers simulate drawing gladii worn at the left…

What’s the cingulum useful for? Cool sound when jingling? (music added…) The officer demonstrates that the soldier won’t trust on its protection capabilities.

Very instructive!....Nice!

Good for beginers like Woadwarrior!

The well explanation of why the roman use their gladius on the right side, its more convincing that to think it was just to diferenced themselves from the greeks as I had been told! :x

BTW: my favorite clip was the last one of onager! Tongue

Wow! it did throw that fire ball very far! 8)

Ave Gioi,

and the onager could throw it much meters more, if the power wasn't reduced to 2/3 - it's really amazing. The museum team had a very clever idea. The flaming ice ball will melt in the lake and nobody has to collect the heavy ammunition afterward (except for the ballista bolts). 8)

How effective is the 'rotating throw' that is demonstrated after the regular throwing method?

Ave Jef,

as far as I understand, it’s a matter of distance and need of aiming ability.

Throwing the ‘classic’ way, you might aim either on a special target, hit it on the front side or, throwing in a group, let the javelins rain down on the enemy.

The other way demonstrated will need no aiming. It won’t matter which end of the javelin will come down first – both of them are fitted with an iron edge. The turning throw will reach enemy groups which are close to you and hit mostly from above. To achieve the same effect by the ‘classic’ way you’ll have to throw in an almost impossible steep angle upward.

So the rotating throw is like quick throwing axes in a target-field as much and as quick as possible, with a high chance of hitting at least something or someone.
