Indeed- I'm going to try just letting the oil saturate a lamp at some point and see just how long it takes and just how messy or not it really is.

The lamp holders can be made or iron, but this one I found in ... the Hull Museum (East Yorkshire) I believe ... is made of clay, and it looks glazed .... :?:

Thanks for the picture Paul Big Grin Strange- why bother to go to the extra trouble to make a pottery holder that's glazed when they could just as easily glaze the inside of the lamps? Then again it's harder to knock over a larger thing and spill the oil...
