You guys \'n gals will probably like this !

A whole lot of SCA-types just banging away at each other (you will need quicktime):

Large-scale SCA Melee

Some Romans, too, by some of the shields. I'm not sure where this is, but suspect Southern California. Any Legio VI guys know about this action?

I found out this was an event called Estrella War (Star wars -- get it?) outside Phoenix, AZ, in the US, which has been going on for some time. Apparently there are people who take this very seriously and form fighting squads, etc. There are lots of dented helms, bruises, some broken bones.

I know I would not want to be in the way of one of those shield rushes.

It's fun to see that in those fights (that for what I know are playied since several years) as usual in the mock combats a bunch of unexperienced guys zoom ahead leaving the ranks and exposing themselves to a sure death if the combat was true...

Yep, the video link is dead. Too bad.

I did a quick search on "Estrella War", and found this gallery:

http://www.tomeistudios.com/agree.html

Enter, go to "Heavy Weapons", and have a look at some of the melee pictures in there, around page 4. That's what the video was about.

Looks fairly impressive I must say. A fellow could get hurt in there, even with the blunted weapons.

PS - I thought the SCA was supposed to be medieval, but there are some pretty Greek-looking guys in that gallery. See page 2.

People do get hurt - and seriously. There was about a seven year stretch where there was at LEAST one med evac by helicopter. Compound fractures, neck injuries, utterly destroyed knees requiring artificial knee replacement joints... I've seen them happen.

Legio IX Hispana was originally a combined SCA/reenactment group but many fellows decided to only pursue the SCA path (it wasn't as much work..._ and drifted off to 'Spartacusland'.

The are more than a few of us who do fight - many with Hibernicus' Spartans - the fellows you found pics of - and I've often kitted out for SCA wars as either an Imperial or Late roman - depending on which armour I decide to bring.

Unforfunately, the film that you linked to was about one of the worst I've seen regarding fighting - this one was mostly unpraticed, non-tactical gaggles of sword-fodder milling about.

I really have to digitize some of my video and get it up on the web...

I used to fight as a 1st C AD Roman. I commanded The 9th Legion and at one time we marched out with 27 of us! .. usually an avg of 20...

I fought in a very authentic Corb B... in fact the handmade fittings on my seg did far better than the store bought stuff!

We have an advantage being from the Western USA.. the style of "war combat" out here is far above what you find in the eastern US or EU

In the southern Calif chapter we field a Royal Army divided into brigades however the brigade from San Diego, Calif is by all counts the best.. we field 125-150 divided into 5-6 companies and practice once per month.

I am currently Polemarch of the Lakedaimones, second in command. At Etsrella War, 2006 we fielded 40 shields! We expect to field 60 at Estrella War in 2007!

My body armor is bronze, greaves too. Hope to have my bronze Corinthian helmet and bronze aspis done by the next war.

Watching that makes it clear why I'm a re-enactor and not a SCA person.

I don't want to get close to anybody trying to hit me with a rattan sword.

I've said it before. Moral courage I have a plenty, but when it comes to physical pain, I'm a coward, and I'm proud of it.
