Personally, I don't object. George Lucas did it with Star Wars and fans flocked to see the enhanced re-release.

Objectors are being silly, first of all, no one's telling them to watch or buy the revamped episodes. The original series is already preserved on DVD. Secondly, they don't and shouldn't have a say in the matter - they're not the owners. If it's profitable to revamp the series, more power to the owners.

Same goes for colorizing black & white films. If the creators had the option to do their films in color they would have. Economic factors forced them into filming them in black & white, nothing else.

Oh brutal- what a dumbass idea. I completely agree with the 'why fix it since it's not broken' sentiment. Lucas claims that he only altered the Star Wars movies to include things he'd wanted to do, but for one reason or another couldn't at the time and that's fair enough (although I doubt very much that a lot of it wasn't just 'this would look cooler' as opposed to 'I really wanted this'). The problem was that he ONLY released his new version and held back the originals until, well, today acutally :lol: Sure I understand that it was a huge investment making the new ones, but if the motivation was truly to realize his vision and not to just make more money, and if they were truly so much better, they should have all stood on their own even in competition with the originals. But I don't know a single old-time Star Wars fan who thought the 'new' ones were any good- myself included.

Colorizing movies is one of the worse ideas ever conceived not because it messes with the originality of a film, but because it looks really crappy :lol:

However, I agree about the foolishness of objecting- just don't watch the new ones! It's simple! But then people seem to love protesting things. I really don't see the problem unless it's done like Lucas did Star Wars...

I'm all for restoration and improving the quality of old films, and I just love seeing scenes that were cut, but actually changing movies just seems wrong. So I do choose to ignore them- just like I ignore the Star Trek films after Wrath of Khan and pretend they don't exist

Star Trek is an enigma- in truth I think that the vast majority of films, series or episodes are just bad- but I still love it. That says something very significant about it on a fundamental level...

I'm more neutral about the idea, but I'm curious to see how seemless the new footage is integrated into the old.

I doubt I will enjoy the series anymore due to these enhancements, but I might. Most of the battle scenes are just largely made up of stale "stock footage."

The first movie was recently enhanced with CGI effects. That film was broken and beyond repair :lol:

But I don't know a single old-time Star Wars fan who thought the 'new' ones were any good- myself included.

The space battle scenes were improved, IMO. But I didn't care for the CGI aliens or people.

No offense to those who like any of those ones of course- I pretend fully 75% of the original series doesn't exist too... Space Hippies?

I agree about the "Space Hippies" episode being ranked among the worst (if it isn't THE WORST). But I give the series a 90% favorable rating. I can only think of 3 or 4 bad episodes. But the rest were good. None were mediocre to me, which is incredible when talking about a TV series. hock: Each episode I either love or hate.

However, I agree about the foolishness of objecting- just don't watch the new ones!

True but Star Trek is an inherently campy space opera- the stock footage and re-used models are part of that charm I think. To be honest I really can't see how new CGI stuff can fit with the old style of everything- even the old stuff done for Enterprise looked CGI. Actually that stuff with the alternate universe and the Defiant was the only good part of that totally awful series :lol:

I'm one of the few who considers Star Trek The Motion Picture to be a great film- it's the only serious science fiction story and I thought was really impressive for 1979- save for the really, REALLY bad uniforms :lol: The Wrath of Khan was more entertaining overall, but was more of an action film than hard core sci-fi like TMP. I realize I'm way in the minority of course :wink: Especially since I HATED the stupid whale one that seems to be most peoples' favorite :lol:

Well yes, they were my major problem too- the cleaned-up battles, improved color blaster bolts, etc. were good. Especially nice was the way they fixed the semi-transparent cockpits, etc. from the old optical printing procedure. I always disliked the weird pink hue to the explosions in Empire- that was a good fix :lol:

Oh definitely- love 'em or hate 'em seems to be the main thing about the show- strangely enough. I guess I'm just more critical :wink: And yeah, the space hippies were the worst episode of any TV series in history...

Really ? I thought it was true science fiction as opposed to Star Wars which is space opera. Star Trek is supposed to be an extention of our history. In other words, it projects into our future while often referencing our past.

I share your skepticism, but CGI is getting better all the time. I completely agree, the last spin-off was awful if not the worst. That episode you refer to is the reason why I'm willing to give the revamped series a chance. I was somewhat impressed with what I saw. And they preserved the classic colors and sound effects of the phasers. That screeching sound with blue phaser bolts

Most people, myself included, hated the slow pace of it (and the uniforms :wink: ). Story-wise, I thought it was a rehash of the episode about the space probe called "Nomad."

I didn't hate "the Voyage Home", although it was my least favorite of the trilogy. It was a light-hearted comedy, which I guess Lenard Nimoy felt the audience needed after the first two emotionally charged movies.
