58 bc scutum

what would the scutum that was carried into gaul in 58 bc
look like as compared to the 1st ad scutum that most units use?

It would have been this type of shield...

With either a wooden umbo or possibly with an umbo like this...

would you know what the height and width measurments of this scutum?

i noticed a vertical spine running along the outside center front.

wood i suppose?

thanks for all your help. am hoping to fabricate one of these if i'm lucky.

The republican scutum was approximately 1.20m long (Polybius VI.23.2-5 states 4 Roman feet, which is equivalent to 1.18m

The shield in the picture (from Fayum) is 1.28m.

Here are a couple owned by Legio XX members:

Tom, on the left, is holding my shield, and Owen on the right has Tom's shield and my helmet. Mix and Match Day, I guess. My shield is 50 inches tall by 25 inches wide (around the curve), but came out too narrow and straight-sided. Tom's is a much better shape, and a tad shorter and wider. My boss is wood, and the vertical spines on both shields are wood as well.

my thanks to all who have answered my posts about the 58 bc scutum.

the pictures and fabricated shields are appreciated and will motivate me towards fabricating a scutum press.
