Anabasis,

This helmet looks much closer to what you're looking for

It's pretty cheap too.

Hi Theo,

I just got this helmet and will provide You and the other interested soon with some remarks about it and detail photos, if wanted. Indeed it was rather cheap (36,99 British Pound) and I like it's shape. Although it has to be reworked yet. First impression, the shape of the cheek pieces, the black color, the form of the 'visor'.

It is made of steel and just painted. May-be I should remove the gildened color.

"BTW, there's always this helmet from Museum Replicas"

I would not touch anything Windlass Steelcrafts / Museum Replicas sell with a ten foot pole. If you are looking for something to sit on your mantlepiece and look nice at home this is fine, but if you intend to use it to depict a Roman soldier you need to understand that it only superficially resembles a Roman helmet in any way and is really the invention and preserve of Hollywood. Maximus probably looks nice, but close to 100% of what you saw in the film was wildly and willfully inaccurate.

That's amazing - only 37 pounds .. Thank you. I've always been curious about this helmet. From the picture the cheek pieces seem to be very small / short. Maybe that's just an optical effect.

So, it's painted steel. Some people believe the helmet and armor were painted, although I would repaint it differently. I never liked a two-tone look.

If I may make a couple of suggestions for reworking this helmet, I think the neck guard should be trimed down so that it reaches at about half way down the cheek guards. And I would cut the crest box off by about a third so that it doesn't reach so low in the back. This would make it more consistent with imperial period attic helmets, IMO.

BTW, I think I'm going to do some reworking on my own helmet. I'd like the back plate to bend inward toward the occipital part of the skull. Here's an example of what I mean :

This is clearly seen on the Louvre Relief of the Praetorian officers. The helmet in the picture is from the movie Ben-Hur (1959) and it looks very good. The main problem with it, IMO, is that the brow plate / visor is oversized. It should extend to just above the ears.

Anyway, I look forward to your next post, Uwe.

Vale.

I agree about Max. His helmet and armor look like hybrids. The attic helmet he wore looked like a cross between the Roman and Greek versions. The armor was a hybrid of lorica musculata and segmentata.

The Praetorians looked awful, IMO. Black leather segs, cavalry helmets, etc.. The regular legionaires looked better though, at least from a distance.

I wouldn't recommend the crest since it's metal-boxed. In fact, don't get it at all. Get a Deepeeka Gallc G N-class (AH6052N) and either make your own crest or buy one from someone who makes them.
