^This is really some piece of art! I especially like how you do their hair, it's almost as if they are real. A great portrait indeed... But Sulla remains my favourite! Smile roll:

Quote:I agree Mr. Lopez, that is a fabulous portrait of Sulla! Might I suggest Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa as your next subject?

There is some really excellent stuff in this thread. There are definitely some really talented people here on the forums.

I worked on a 3D model last semester of the House of the Faun for a graduate seminar on Pompeii. This is my first big standalone project that I've started from scratch that I have released for public consumption. I should note that I did it in two months and it is not complete yet. I have to do some more detailed modeling, especially with the fauces and other ornamental features of the house (including making the column capitals more realistic). I also have to replicate most of the remaining wall-paintings. Nonetheless, I wrote a blog article about it.

Au contraire - this is fantastic stuff! I feel a new model coming on...

Wow, these are very cool, indeed. I happened to work a bit with 3dmax a while ago and tried something similiar, but on a far lower scale.
are the pillars "real" structured or is it texture? how many vertices and surfaces has your modell?

I guess GJC just can't see the pictures from his place.

Yes, the columns are all geometrically fleshed out. The capitals somewhat simplified (it would take a lot of work to do a really, really geometrically accurate Pompeian ionic or Corinthian capital), but the shafts are accurate, some with 20 and some with 24 flutes, depending on the column type and the archaeological record. Being that there are two peristyles, the second one being larger and two stories, the columns add a lot of surfaces to the model. The entire house is in the neighborhood of 700,000 triangles, but without the peristyles, I think it's around 100,000. I have a Radeon 3850XT, so it runs fine on my desktop PC. Those high resolution renders (8x6 inches at 300 pixels per inch) only took about 45-60 minutes to render out.

I used Maya 2008.

thanks for the info. and 700.000 surfaces? well, thats a lot. my pc works just to about 40.000.

If I was to criticize, I'd say you needed a higher res grass terrain texture, so you wouldn't have to tile it so much. Also, the roof tiles are too uniform and look "plastic". You've done 100x better than I could though, overall. Smile

I can't recommend this website enough for texture sources:

It's free too, up to 15MB per day.

Thank you very much for the resource. I didn't know about it, but will definitely use it. I do in fact want to update the terracotta roof textures. As for the grass, I borrowed that from a project of a much smaller scale structure, so there was no tiling. My goal is to use the Maya grass feature to do geometric grass, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Yeah, "geometric" grass can be as easy and as simple as one 2-sided tri per "blade" of grass if you wanted to go that route. Unfortunately I think that'll increase your "poly" count greatly and make rendering an even bigger pain in the patookis. Wink If you want, I can make a very high res grass terrain texture for you (it'd really be no bother at all, as I am very skilled at it). What is the resolution of the current grass terrain texture you are using?
