When a centurion was promoted up the ladder, is there any evidence at all that his century went up the ladder with him? It just struck me that scuta and helmets also bear his name, and I just thought the tie between men and centurion might possibly a bit stronger than I've often assumed?
I know centurions had a higher fatality rate, so moving one man is far easier than a whole unit, but at the same time there must have been some retirement of the veterans, so space could be made for large-scale promotion.
Just a thought, not a super-serious proposal.
