All things considered that Catalina doesn't look like its in too bad shape, it shouldn't be too hard to get back in flying condition.


A friend of a friend actually just got ahold of a P-51 recently for the bargain of $30,000 US. He went to some auction out in the middle of nowhere and one of the items for auction was marked "plane in a box." He asked the auctioneer if he could see what it was and the guy let him, inside was a perfectly preserved in grease P-51. He immediatley called his banker and made sure he could get a loan then bid, apparantly no-one else there knew what it was and how much it was worth, he was the only bidder and got it for that price.

On the Germans...

To add to the list, the American Sea-wolf submarine and the electric torpedo were both ripped off of German designs. And then there was the space race, which was more or less a contest between our Germans and the Soviet's Germans.

It has been said that if it weren't for the Germans there wouldn't have been a war, not even if you don't consider the whole nazi/fascism angle.

They were just dang smart. No doubt about it.

On the Wright brothers...

Yeah there were plenty of people flying before the Wright's. They were also crashing. The thing that the Wrights did was invent controlled flight.

In 1908 they demonstrated their utter superiority in Paris. Santos Dumont was devasted by how much more advanced the wright's design was.

It's positively silly to talk about others inventing powered flight. The Wrights owned that title.

It's kinda like a strange phenomenon I've noticed among Italian-Americans. There is apparently an Italian that supposedly invented the phone before Bell. All investigations demonstrate that while he had the basic ideas he was far behind Bell in actual execution. In sum, the claim that someone else invented the phone is just fatuous, but Italian Americans are just adamant about it. I suppose it dates from a time of ethnic persecution of Italians in america, but it just baffles me. Italians had the Romans, the Renaissance, Galileo...good grief. You'd think that'd be enough to assuage any inferiority complex. Why go whoring after the humble telephone? It's the same way with flight.

In many ways, the accomplishments of Santos and the Germans far outstrip the Wrights contributions, but I suppose there is a special yearning for "firsts" even if the "firsts" are far more humble than the later developments.

Personally, I'd rather be the culture that invented warp drive, than the one that first put a man in orbit.

There's first and firsts. The Wrights were not the first ones to fly nor the firsts to invent or excute powered flight. They were the ones to get ahead with controlled flight, indeed, that's their accomplishment. You can't have modern flight without it. However, the Wrights are now getting all the credit, which simply is not theirs. It's like that old mistake of saying the Roman Empire ended in 476.

Not me. Who know what you'll bring back? Why are (almost) all SF stories and theories so positive? I bet there's some big galactic empire out there that somehow missed us or does not bother. But when we invent warp drive... EEKS!

If that was true, they would have been here by now. I'm with Enrico Fermi on that one. Every single island in the pacific bigger than a rock was inhabited when Europeans discovered them. The pursuit of resources has caused humans to occupy every scrap of usuable land. I can't imagine it would be any different for any space-faring species.

If there was a galactic empire out there, we'd be toast already.
