Legion Shield Devices??
#1
Hello All,

My name is Brian. I am a new guy here to the list. Found this site today!! Wow!! I really like it. Tons of info!

So I got a question: What is the proper names for the devices on the front of the legion shields? Do you know where I could find pics of all the different shield device designs?

Thank you all for reading my post. Thanks in advance for the help.

Respectfully,
Brian C.

Hi !

Dunno about other sources, but many years ago I studied the shield devices on Trajan's column and elsewhere. The only conclusions I was able to reach concerned Praetorian devices ( and even then, the emblem of the guard as a whole, or one particular cohort ? ) and tentatively identified the emblems of the second and fourteeth legions ( see: Phil Barker; "Armies and enemies of Imperial Rome" 4th edition)

In the book I referred to, youwill find many of the shield devices depicted on Trajan's column - auxiliary as well as legionary - and also late roman shield devices depicted in a document called the "Notitia Dignitatum".

As to the name of such devices, my latin is not so good, but you could refer to them as "emblema"........
