Good to hear about your PHD. I defended my MA ancient history thesis in Roman uniform once, flanked by two iron clad roman bodyguards. Great fun.

Time to start planning in earnest. Is everyone still planning to come? Who wants to do a lecture? If so, what about?

We're trying to get a small meeting room in a location very close to the train station which should cost us no more than about 10 euros per person in total (assuming we'll be about 20). The Apollo hotel is closest. It's not the very cheapest however, but room sharing can keep cost down. Also, if we book pretty much the entire hotel at once, we could try to get a discount. So who is going to need a hotel room? I assume some of the Dutchies will go home every evening?

Finally, we're thinking about organizing a trip to the Haltern museum (about 120km from Nijmegen). It's kind of out of the way, but very much worth the trip and apparently has one of the travelling Pompeii exhibitions at that time. Because of the distance and time needed to travel, we would probably plan this trip for the Friday afternoon, so, another question: when will you guys arrive?

Yes, dates are the same (post above updated).
My PhD exam may or may not be around that date. I can still try to aim for it, but it depends mostly on the University auditorium, which has its own agenda which cannot be influenced by lowly PhD candidates.

Maybe the "pedel" will remember that he is not supposed to have an agenda of his own once his office is occupied by a cohort of reenactors? :wink: (Cf. Monty Python's Army Protection Racket - wait until after John Cleese has announced the arrival of the Vercotti brothers.)

Yep, me. If we travel by train I could check if you could travel with me from Hamburg for a low fare on tickets because I have a BahnCard 25. But it's too early to check on schedules and prices yet.
