Please watch this documentary if you get a chance

It's called "An Inconvenient Truth", and it's the documentary on global warming made by Al Gore, the former US Presidential candidate. I know most of the topics within are somewhat common knowledge, but the how's and why's are really explained and put into a harsh but truthful perspective.

Please watch this movie, if only to add an extra bit of awareness to your knowledge about the dangers of polution to our planet.

It's a message that everybody needs to hear!!!!!

Heck, I'm practically living in a country that may well disappera for more than 50% because some nations deny there is a problem.

But then again, so do the citizens of Florida, so maybe they'll listed to Al gore THIS time!

(we have a rule again modern religion and politics, but how about the environment ?) Big Grin

Good point Vorti...all you need is greenland or the less than half of the pack ice on Antartica to melt and that will raise the global water levels up 20 feet. Maybe that would get their attention.

I've a daughter, and many here have sons, I did my life enough happy in a world, after all, beautiful: the Sun, the blue skies, the glorious sea, the clean wind, the green grass, the huge forests, the colorful flowers and the white (and cold) snow. I enjoyied of them. While I cannot think to what my daughter will see.
If the the Occident is guilty about the environment giant damages till now and it's so, even if we'll do the impossible, it will not be enough, I'm afraid. At least three billions of people want to become exactly like us and having exactly the same things we have, I really don't see how to convince them to renounce... Will we have the time for some revolutionary scientific discoveries? Do you really believe that our scientists will can find quick and really effective solutions to be applied on large scale in the next 20 years? This is not a SF movie.

About the end of November here in Roma as everywhere, but on past days I wore just a tee shirt all the morning; Just this afternoon a fresh wind from the balkans stated to low gently the warm. On past sunday the seasides were full of people and of big 4x4 SUVs... Anyone want to live as a rich, and now in the East too...

I'm banal, I know, but I repeat the same old thing: we all are really crazy.

Banal and pessimist Sad

No...you're absolutely right Daniele. We ALL have to change our lifetsyles if we want to reverse the damage being done, and we have to do it dramatically. I think enough regular joe people are more than willing to do it, we just need our leadership to put aside their hungry wallets and bank accounts and do the right thing for our retirements and our children.

Sometimes I wish there was such a thing as super heroes like Thor or Silver Surfer...they could make the politicians listen. Although, I'm sure another couple massive Category 5 hurricanes, cyclones and typhoons may work just as well.

What's even funnier is the insurance companies saying that their payouts in insurance claims have skyrocketed in direct relation to the changing environment. Duh...but you know it's bad when they complain about it.

I just watched the trailer..
Its the truth, but some people don't want to give up their huge incomes and fancy lifestyles, so the damage to the Earth continues.
Unlike two scary films: The Day After Tomorrow and War of The Worlds, this film is about reality....
How many of you guys don't even consider using one or two environment friendly products such as Ecover or organic produce, checking things for low cfc emissions...(not just electrical things...even paint emits cfcs) one energy saving light bulb is better than none.....(that reminds me..I need a new one) every little bit helps. I put less than a [biodegradeable] supermarket carrier bag of rubbish out most weeks, usually because it's starting to smell rather than being full .....and the rest goes to the recycling centre...
I'm no angel....sometimes I feel guilty .... but at least I do something -
10 years brings us right about to the time of the Nostradamus prophecy...which indicates a change to the world 'as we know it'....some think it will be war, some due to a climate change or a long overdue world axis tilt..others - the return of the spacemen. The more religious types...see the Messiah returning etc.
The way things have been going over the past few years.....it's obvious Mother Earth is starting to crack up undess the stress of being ignored, used and even abused by her children and needs a rest to recover... otherwise she will go down and take most of us with her. Another way of looking at it - in the viewpoint of the ancients....we have angered the Gods and Goddesses or elemental spirits and they are showing this by causing havoc, destruction and death.

Actually it's not Greenland melting that will raise the sea levels, that is mainly caused by the increasing water volume of the earth's oceans due to global warming.
The melting ice on Greenland will almost certainly shut down the northern part of the Gulf Stream in the Atlantic, causing a miniature (but that's still centuries) Ice Age that will freeze our balls off before the water comes. No fiction, it has been proved to have happens many times before in the eons behind us.

Of course this will be a small consolation for our children or grandchildren.

I've seen it. What surprises me is: why so late? We already know this, more or less, since the late 1960's, when Bob Ehrlich published The Population Bomb. Soon, better predictions were published, and by the mid-seventies, nearly every civilized nation had taken at least some measures. However, in the 1980's, awareness fell, and what puzzles me is: why?

Al Gore's documentary, which is not hysterical and fair in its judgment, is simply too late. The environment can no longer be saved. Right now, the average life expectancy in southeast Asia is diminishing, not because there's too much pollution, but because the production of cereals implies the production of methane as well. The people are slowly being poisoned, and our children will be next. Those who survive will ask why people in the 1980's-1990's just said: After us the deluge.

Our children will complain about our decadence and cynicism, and they will be right when they say that our consumerism has killed them. We are a generation of swine. Al Gore's wake-up call is sympathetic, and no one will blame him, but it's now too late to take measures. If we had wanted to prevent the slow suffocation of our children, we would have done it before the mid-nineties. It's a moral issue.

Well, if the world's population went from the 6.4 billion that it's sitting at now, down to less than 1 billion, that would dramatically help with the C02 being released into the air. Of course that may very well happen once the environmentt really starts to collapse.

I think if things started to reverse it's salvagable, but it literally has to happen now, and in drastic terms.

1. No illegal topics (porn, bombmaking, inciting hatred, hacking, pirating, etc.). No modern politics or religion (though discussion of ancient political/religious themes is allowed, so long as it does not degenerate into proselytizing or attacks on other faiths.) If you must tie everything to the war in Wherever-stan, please take it elsewhere. This forum does not exist as a debate site for current world events -- it was created to discuss the ancient world, specifically the Roman military.
