Photos Welcome!
#1
Greetings!

My name is Sven Littkowski, and I am involved into the reconstruction of ancient Roman ships. To be exact, I do lots of reconstructional illustrations.

I am contacting you to find out, if your members would be interested to participate with the supply of photos. I am in need of those photos showing single soldiers (archers as well) and Roman ballistae and Roman catapultae. A plain background would be the best.

The purpose is to add those members as soldiers on small and large Roman ships. Please see the example I attached.

In all cases, the faces are not recognizable due the small size (despite of the big resolution), a fact which cannot be changed. But it serves also as protection of each individual which makes that circumstance to an advantage, and hopefully to a reason to join.

I would be happy if my request for photo supplies could be sent to other re-enactment groups. Thanks.

Sincerely,

Sven Littkowski

Hi Sven,
I would point you to the reenactment section of the Romanarmy.com gallery, but I'm afraid it is offline.
Have you got more examples of your ship reconstructions? What are they based on?
Greets!

This board abounds with interest! A link to the website might be helpful, but potential viewers should be warned it is a java-rich environment (with all that that entails). Still, it worked for me in Firefox on Linux (using the 1.5 release of java; your mileage may vary). However, their server's clock (which you'll notice if you visit their site stats section) is claiming GMT is one hour ahead of where it really is, so don't try and set your watch by it ;-)

Well worth some time exploring.

Sven,

Very few groups/people own artillery. Among them, you can count with the fingers of one hand those who can boast a one/two mina stone-thrower. Then you need pics against a plain background...

Be sure that we'd be happy to help you in case we could...

Thanks for the responses. Please continue to respond.

Jasper: the ships are based on all sorts of information we have about ancient times: reliefs, mosaics, wall paintings, ancient descriptions, graffiti (sketches on walls), and the current research data of maritime archaeology.

Yes, I have around 20 reconstructional sketches of high resolution, already. But they are too big to be shown here. Some have a size of over 90 MB!

It looks like in 2007 the first of my illustrations are being published in two books - one published in the USA, the other one in Germany. The US American book uses one of my illustrations to show one of the large ancient freighters which could transport several hundreds people and was used by apostel Paulus. The German book is a maritime scientific book by the wellknown scientific author Arvid Göttlicher, and will show (hopefully) an envelope designed by me (based on ancient Tunisia mocaics).

AGAIN: I NEED SO URGENTLY PHOTOS OF YOU ALL IN ROMAN ARMOUR. The larger the photo, the better! A plain background would be great, but any might work. The final result will be small, your faces will not easily be recognizable due the small size. That also should be in your favour. Some exceptions are small boats where the persons are bigger.

Greetings,

Sven Littkowski

Quote:Provincial-Roman fishing boat from ancient Tunisia, based on a mosaic. The faces of the humans were made out of faces of existing persons (eyes from one person, mouth from another, etc.). To avoid that terrible workload, I welcome photos of everyone.

A laudes for that great work of art. I especially like the original displayed in the picture.
Btw, i agree with Ivan about the clothing - my guess is that these guys did a lot of swimming. Big Grin
Also, take care with the African or Arab facial features - during these times, North Africa was not ethnically similar to what it is today.

If you need pictures of people, send me a PM with your email address please.

Titus Sabatinus Aquilius:

Great link! But I need you all sending the photos to me. I cannot just take them since I need their permission. Send me a PM, and I can give each of you my e-mail addresses for photo submission!

Faventianus:

Principially you would be right - it would be more authentic to display them nearly naked (just with that little minimum clothing they wear there). But bear in mind, that if persons are displayed so realistic as I do it, I cannot show them almost naked. Children, too, might like to see the reconstructions...

Vortigern Studies:

Yes and no. Swimming was for coastal persons quite common, yes, but fishermen don't needed swimming for their job. Probably many were not really free men, so the minimum clothings ensured a certain control to prevent stealing. And the weather is warm there, in addition.

Galla Placidia Domingus AND EVERYONE:

It is a nice photo. I need so many different posings of soldiers with the typical red shield. I need pilum-throwing positions (various), I need waiting positions, fight positions, arrow-shooting positions, protective positions, and whatever else comes into your mind...

ALSO WELCOME: other costumes: ancient India, Ancient Arabia, ancient civil sailors, ancient fishermen, ancient ladies and female slaves, etc. All will be placed onboard of my ancient ships...

Send me a PM to get my e-mail addresses for photo submission.

Again: plain backgrounds are the best for me (but not neccessary).

Send me a private message (PM) to get my e-mail addresses.

Best greetings to you all,

Sven Littkowski

Hi, perhaps you are well aware of this, but the following link is THE place to go for acient ships on the basis of actual finds. Others interested may also find it usefull.

http://www2.rgzm.de/navis/Musea/Mainz/NavismusEngl.htm

If you follow the links back to NAVIS it provides a comprehensive overview of all Roman ships found and has reconstruction drawings, like the Blackfriar cargoship.

A group in germany reconstructed a small river patrolboot, but I couldn't find the link. They have sailed it manned.

Robert:

Thanks, I knew both things... :-) )
But the RGZM website does not really have hi-res reconstructional illustrations such I am doing. However, I even communicate with Mr. Ronald Bockius who is currently the appointed director of the RGZM.

That river galley was, indeed, a speedy late Roman patrol ship. However, there are certain discussions among archaeologists if really everything is reconstructed in an authentic way. The opinions differ at the star of the ship, the bow, and some other smaller details.

Besides that, the small galley showed quite remarkable performances.

I am adding as attachment a similar river galley of the early 5th century.
