well of course i do not know what he was wearing that day, but i do know he was leading a classis detachment to save people and couldnt resist walking up the hill of vesuvius (or its vicinity) where he succumbed to the vapours... so i hope something military........ like an officer's kit......
the sources are very vague on it........
i was in such a shock when i heard about the library they found from which charred scrolls had been partly used as cooking "wood" for fire......

In June, 1982, when Bisel unearthed and examined the soldier and Portia, the boathouses hadn't even been opened yet.

His nephew tells us:
Quote:He raised himself up with the assistance of two of his servants, and instantly fell down dead; suffocated, as I conjecture,
by some gross and noxious vapour, having always had a weak
throat, which was often inflamed. As soon as it was light again,
which was not till the third day after this melancholy accident, his
body was found entire, and without any marks of violence upon it,
in the dress in which he fell, and looking more like a man asleep
than dead.
So I assume he was brought back and given a proper burial.

Sory to enter with this question so late, but I just found this posting again.
Is that the remains on a helmet on the face down skeleton?

Unfortunately not. It's the back of his skull.
I am interested to know if there is any evidence Bisel was able to use to suggest how old the leg wound was. Obviously it had had time to heal, but how long? Five years or twenty five. Is there any evidence that it was even sustained in his adult life?
I am also, of course, interested in his highy unusual 'dagger', which is not clearly visible in the pictures above and which I do not have very clear pictures of (I do have some somewhere but they are far from clear).

hock: What dagger? Send the pics to me and I'll see if I can clean them up some time if you want.

Wow! Laudes to you Mr Irarte.
It's shocking that the equipment is sat there for twenty-two years without being properly published  (that's two evils in 10 minutes).

It's unfortunately not limited to just Italian archaeology.
