Where there any? I find it hard to believe that it's a modern concept starting with Jack the Ripper. I know it may have been a difficult issue to identify, and I'm not sure what investigative services were offered either.

Well, I haven't heard of any but I can't imagine why there wouldn't have been any, I mean the way the human mind works hasn't changed much if at all for many thousands of years.

Yeah, I totally agree. Just wondering if anyone had read any references about it, or what kind of investigative/policing procedures where in place at the time.

Avete,
at these times people had not to be criminal if they wanted to satisfy their perversions. They could hire as interrogation specialist, for example. Other opportunities were given in wars at plunderings. So I think there was not such a need to go underground.

Most of the leading generals? on campaigns of conquest! Govenors/Consuls eliminating people who had property they wanted?
Was a society that did not concieve of murder in the same way we do!

The Greeks certainly had many stories of what would be considered serial killers, albeit often with some inhuman aspects. Prokrustes/Damastes would would invite travelers to his guest bed and then either trim their feet or stretch them till they just fit. And the Odyssey is one long account of battling and escaping a series of serial killers.
