Ave Sulla & thank you very much for the laudes.

A particularly good Roman (and other ancient) art website link:

http://www.mcah.columbia.edu/dbcourses/search.cgi (searchable)

Not so easily navigated, but well worth the effort. Many images are available in two sizes.

Thanks for the links, Amit.

You know, if there's one building that represents the culmination of Roman art and architecture I think beyond doubt it would be the Church of the Holy Wisdom, Hagia Sophia, in Constantinople. I just learned from a TV program that the church is the largest building the Romans ever erected in their 1,000-plus year history. It supercede's all the great baths in Rome : the baths of Trajan, Caracalla, Diocletian, etc..

It incorporates all the architectural methods pioneered by the Romans such as arches, domes, etc... Not to mention mosaics adorning the interior which later emperors continued adding their own. And the building still stands today baring some scars from the post-Iconoclast period and the Turkish conquest but we can still view it.

Constantine: Thank you for your kind comment. It's a pleasure to find & share this information. I'll continue adding links as time permits. So much beauty around the world; so little time to create, share & enjoy.

Yes, Hagia Sophia is particularly special, from its creation & with so many changes over 17 centuries. It was the world's largest cathedral for almost 1,000 years. So much beauty.

Related item:

Another Roman art website. Mostly Late Roman Empire, Germanic Kingdoms, and Eastern Roman / Byzantine Empire. Much good content & many links.
