We almost got banned in Greece!?

Thanks for your efforts, Stefanos!

Guys, Stefanos is also right about modern politics and religion - forum rules say we leave that alone as a rule.

About the monuments and artefacts and their care, well, there's ben so much time and ownership where those are concerned, I'd say it's almost impossible to lay the blame anywhere. The Elgin Marbles (to take up one hot topic) for instance, can we even blame a country? Most decisions were made locally, artefacts changed hands between private persons often, legally or illegally.

In case we forget it, these rich collectors of 200 years ago, have also been at the basis of our modern knowledge and method! Schliemann, who probably took home much more stuff than the Turks allowed him (above the counter, I bet he paid some 'officials' handsomely to look the other way) was also a rich foreigner without whose passion archaeoly would not have made it to the newspaper headlines so quickly. Tutachamun was dug up by a foreigner in Egypt (Carter), paid by another (very rich) foreigner (Carnarvon), with the results we know. Most stuff from Egypt was 'collected' by foreigners during the 19th c. (I think - earlier even?), but without them they'd never have sparked European interest to study Egypt, or to translate hieroglyphs. Not to mention all the other work done on the Near and Middle East!

Etcetera, etcetera.

My point? We can't undo the past. Bad things happened then, but a lot of good also came of that.

I agree about the politics issues Vortigern though i didnt and dont intend to expand on those further i would hate to leave uncommented a point that was just a flare way beyond historical facts (something we care alot around here).

I can see the logic behind your points about early days of archaeology. I agree that we cant undo the past. But we can do the future. Since now archaiology isnt about tombraiding but about scienceof the highest level, and we claim to be more civilized than the people before us why dont return all the artifacts staying abroad to their rightfull owners. The exploit of those artifacts displayed in museums for centuries has payed back and more all the efforts the ''hosting'' countries have done.

Sorry if my comments offended you Yiannis. I just find it strange to hear of the 20 cent greek govt being called an english puppet is all, being half greek. True I don't know all the history, but I fear this is not the place to go into it.

I think basically, though, other than missing the thieving of european tourists, I said the same thing as you about the damage to greeces monuments...

Was this thread not originally about the churches reaction to a mock religious ceremony?

Not necessarily. It was about the establishment reaction and the grief given to re-enactors.

Yes and then it went to international relations.
Ice did not broke but we all tread on thin ice.
But I am not over-worried because in the off-topic thread we discussed more "hot potato" issues.

I just don't want the posts to give the Admins the idea to move it to "off topic". I belive that any other issue that might spring in this thread better be discussed by PM or go to "off topic"

Yes I agree there! Juast when I originally asked about the 'official' opposition quite some time ago  I was told it was religious in nature.... So now I will shut up! :?

Well spotted. I'll start a new thread in the OT section, where we can CAREFULLY discuss who is to care for ancient remains, in the ground and above ground.

This thread will remain reserved for the continuing story of re-enactment in modern Greece, and comparable issues from others.
