Salve!

Did the horse actually jump the "wall"?? It's an interesting still, as far as I know horse behavior, it either jumped (back legs seem poised) or lashed out with the front hooves (as good a guess as the first). The third option (reared and threw the rider) would certainly have happened had the guys stood up at that moment. Horses are on average smarter then their riders

If that was a planned jump, those guys have plenty big "kahonays" in my book. There's no way I'd agree to do this stunt. Not in this life time nor in the next.

I can just see it. We would have more lawyers at reenactment events than we would have Romans.

Well can't be worse than having some one running sixty ton blocks up and down over your head 12 hours a day!

I guess I have more faith in steel cables than I do horses. But then again I don't hang out under 60 ton blocks either.

I'd do it. After all, if the horse didn't think it could get over the obstacle it wouldn't try would it? In any case, it would certainly be something to talk about afterwards. 8)

On another front, 'showjumping' is very popular in New Zealand and the horse and rider probably have plenty of experience.

Looks to me like that's a time for being behind the shorter scuta, thanks. Bet the guy on the left side of the line said, "Boy! That was loud!" when he stood up again.

That horse is about to takeoff. As a showjumping rider, that horse looks very confident and leaning back on his hindquarters ready to jump. Those shields would look like any brightly coloured showjumping fence so to the horse, its just another obstacle. As long as the troops didnt move suddenly or stand up, you woudl be quite safe. Dont forget, horses have a sense of self preservation.

If he didnt want to jump those shields, trust me he would have put the brakes on, a long way away from where he is.

Unfortunately, that rider's position, ie holding the reins so tight that the horse cant lower his head and neck to judge the height, plus sitting back hard in the saddle is doing everything to prevent that horse jumping well, and true, risking the horse not getting his legs high enough or body for that matter.

Would have been interesting to see the rest of the jumping sequence to see just how much the horse actually cleared the top of those shields. My money is, it would have been quite low, if not touching a shield as his hind legs dragged over.

Here endeth the "how to showjump" lesson. Great shot though! Big Grin D D

I smile, insurance/lawyers.quick buck mentality... every sport here is becoming increasingly 'dangerous'. Showjumping activities are being pressured, i cant ride my horse in an enclosed jumping arena for fear he may hurt someone incase someone happened to casually stroll out and decide to have a picnic in front of a showjumping fence, but you can walk your 'killer' dog down the street, who has been so well behaved this week because he only mauled one kid!

sorry back on track now

ACTUALLY NO KAHUNA's on second glance!

A fellow competitor has just seen that photo and her comments were "think the guys behind the shield are safe, the rider is about to see first hand what its like to be a catapult (ballista)!

That horse's front legs arent that high and he's pushing off the ground...his nice arc over the jump is going to be rather parallel to the ground...no stirrups, leaning back. that rider would have NO KAHUNA's on the other side..if in fact he and the horse dont part company in the process

OUCH!

Yeah and with the money they'd rake off of (us), maybe they'd spend it on good kit!

The only way to solve this is to get the person who took the shot to end our agonizing uncertainty and send in the next few pics. Did the "wall-boys"get the chop or not? Did the rider do a bird imitation? Do Roman shields stay together when pounded by flailing hooves? Great suspense, film at nine ....
