Gladius baldric lenght and design
#1
Salve,

I know that it depends of the height and weight of the "Légionnaire" but what do you advice if i want to build myself a Glavius sling, lenght, wide of the 2 points side (you know the "Y" side of the sling)?
Was it issued one that each have to adjust or while paying his own stuff, made a custom that match his own need?

I sling alot, and have read about slings, but I'm not sure what a 'Glavius sling' is? Could you describe it?

Well, my English is not perfect, how do you call the long piece of leather that hang the sheath of the glavius , it allowed you to carry your glavius, the sheath is not hook to the belt, so what is the name of the "sling" and his lenght and design ?

Christophe.

I think the word you are looking for is gladius, and the leather that holds it is a baldric in English.

Mine is cut to fit my height, so I think they are no set limits on the length.

Most funerary stelae which show baldrics show the pommel of the sword somewhere near the soldier's armpit. This suggests a very short baldric which might possibly be done up with a small buckle placed near the scabbard (not a cavalry harness juction such as is often used by re-enactors).

Salut Christophe,

I made my baldric adjustable using a rivet with a bunch of holes on the one part of the leather strap so if I needed it longer or shorter, I had the option. But as Paul said, measure it to your size and that should be fine.

Sounds like a fairly good argument for a buckled baldric. I know there is some controversy about it but could help in this case.I think,Christophe, you asked width too, yes? About 3/4 inches or 19cm is close,I think. Split that in half for the double ends.Does that sound about right, guys?
Be sure to leave one longer than the other.I'd even say start with the split end and attatch it first leaving the baldric extra long. Easier to cut off than add on.Mine is also in my armpit.

Hi guys,

How does this tie in with the often seen methode of passing the baldric through the belt. I find this helps a smooth draw as it keeps the split ends of the baldric in place. Then again, I wear a spatha. The pommel is level with the underside ribcage and swivels forward when drawn to get a good clean draw.

We wear the balteus over the straps of the baldric to keep it from flopping around. That way the gladius isn't all over the place when marching, running, etc. Just a modern way of dealing with it.No way of knowing historical accuracy, though.Yes,it does help when drawing the sword.

Gaivs Antonivs Satvrninvs, Robert, many thanks for the advice
Gaivs Antonivs Satvrninvs, i suppose you mean 1,9 Centimeter width, well i have to see when i will receive the Gladius and the baldric, but thought today to something and after my work shift, i ve check : 1,50 meter length, more or less 1,5/2centimeter wide and end by a loop on each side, a big on one side and a small on the other, all in simple brown leather
16,50 EUROS
You will scream and i wait for insult but finding leather seem to me difficult, so i thought to a..........................................................Dog leash

The bigger loop for the handle will be cut in 2 taking care of the double ends and to be sure to leave one longer than the other. The small loop on the other side is for the metal hook on the necklace, so without the metal hook and some iron bolt...
ET VOILA

For hanging the Puggio, there some dog necklace in the same quality and color of brown Leather 12,50EUROS

OK now after my insane idea, i want to apologize if i offend the effort of any Legion reenactors or researchers
and ready to be ban

Christoph,
Thank you for correcting my math.I think I meant 19mm.Does that sound better? Believe it or not the dog leash sounds about right. Should be the right width, not too wide, and quite strong. You're on the right track.

You're right 19mm, so won't be ban today,

I ve thought before to a hunt rifle sling but with modern material as Nylon or else synthetic, was not optimist on a leather one, worse while hunter like drawn on their stuff, a simple piece of brown leather would be harder to find than a Hamata today :?
And this animal shop was on my way home so why not?
Thought of use of a totally different way that it was create at the beganning a tool, a item or any treasure you find, was my only solution before Internet knowledge research or industrial production allowed us to access to lookalike product.
