Helmet question

Hello,

A question about helmets: how is the method to make the reinforcing peaks or front reinforcing bars of coolus and gallic helmets?

I wnat to know both the roman way to do it and modern alternatives.

I think deepeeka uses casting ones. Can we forge one from a rectangular bar?

Any suggestion are welcome.

I think that the easiest way to do it would be to cut the shape from steel or brass plate and then work the ends into a vertical round shape with a hole for the rivet.

I am certain that you could make it from rectangluar bar if you can forge it, but my suggestion is really for those who do not have access to a forge and the necessary tools and experience.

Of course, there's not much easy about cutting those curves that must match the curve of the helmet very closely, but it could be done. The measurement problem would be the difficult thing. Start with cardboard, and cut a little at a time, until it fits, then use the cardboard as a template for marking the metal. To make a band like that will actually take a pretty large piece of metal, with much of it going to waste after the cutting. Measure twice, cut once.

The browguard on mine was forged from barstock, as I think the originals would have been done. Casting them would make them very brittle when struck.

For curving the flat bar to fit the helmet.. it can be worked cold

You can also use a propane or mapp gas torch and work smaller sections.
