Looking at the pictures of the Worms Italic D, I noticed something truly strange. There appear to be two brow ridges on the helmet. The top one is the one with the little regularly spaced nicks in it. It appears to be extremely thin. The bottom one is smaller but much thicker. It is quite simply bizarre.
A couple of possibilities come to mind. Perhaps the first ridge is decorative, and second ridge is for protection. Or maybe the second ridge was added by conservators to support the delicate upper ridge.
Does anyone have any ideas?

THAT'S IT! He's right, Tony, we're seeing the gap between the guard and the helmet bowl. Thanks, Jasper, he was trying to drive me crazy with this over the weekend!

Ave omnes,
no, there’s not only a shadow visible. New examinations revealed remains of a leather pouch, which now was identified as the suspension of an inflatable leather lifebelt.
Regarding the obvious, eye-catching typical nautical elements, the helmet without any doubt has to be classifies as a classic classis navy model.
With this additional feature, the headgear could be used as a buoyancy aid, drift anchor or auxiliary buoy.
See brand new reconstruction:

Quote:Hi Tony,
Are you sure your eyes are not fooled there? The browridge does not connect with the helmet bowl, which means that not only does light shine through, you also get shade. Check out the other photos in the Helmet Database
I see says the blind man to his deaf friend.
It sure did look strange to me.
But yes you are certainly correct.

Ave Tony,
personally I know that, too. The more you look at a pic, the more you'll 'see'.
Very often there is only a single poor quality pic available. (Remembering some of my 'visions' concerning the Krefeld Italic D when we just had one blurry photograph for the start
hock:  )...
That's why the RA helmet database and other pic collections featuring different viewing angles are priceless.
