My 1st sling
#1
Heres my 1st sling, roughly 5 feet over all. Braided Hemp, Linen wrapped finger loop, elk split pocket (lookng for goat leather). My first stone went roughly 70 yards with easy spinning, and I have never slung a stone before...these are going to be fun! Opinions/thoughts/concerns???

Very cool.

I am thinking of making one for myself, any advices?

I used a heavy hemp twine, tightly braided, and also tight stitching on the pocket...other than that, its my first, so I would not be in a position to give very sound advice.....it was quite easy to make, quick too.

In college, I made a sling. When slinging for the first eight or nine occassions, it is a good idea to wear a safety helmet. I sent about half the rocks I slung straight up in the air. What goes up must come down.

Colored golf balls are also a good choice for practice ammo.

Another thing I found was that winding it round and round before letting loose doesn't make it go further or hit harder. A simple economy of motion is best.

Just like Wes' mine had a thumb loop and a grip/let-go end.

The first sling I experimented also had a pocket like Wes' sling. In practice, I found this was a bad thing as it sometimes interfered with the projectile getting free from the sling. A simple strap works just fine and is easier to make.

Just made my sling (sorry no camera so no pics), works very well.

Found out the exact same thing, a single 360º spin is enough for me and i seem to have more control then spining round and round.

Hey Wes,

Do you have any close up pics of the "pocket area"?

Here is my latest sling, made from a total of 9 strands of hemp. Pocket straps individually braided and then a pocket sewn over them. All materia is leather, hemp twine braided flat, and loop, end and sewing done in linen thread.

Hope this helps! Sorry as well, my camera is not a good one.

That pic helps alot! Thanks Wes! That pic answered my questions. I wasn't real sure as to how it all came together until now! Did you just use "walmart" grade craft hemp?
