I have seen this in movies documentaries saying that infants were thrown in when they werent.

Kaiadas

This was a chasm that those with miasma (i.e. murderers) were thrown in and not infants.

Yeah, I'm aware of it too. It's really quite bad that such info is continued to be used in documentaries and even published writing, since to my knowledge, it's more likely just a myth that began during the rennaissance to glorify the Spartan training practice.

I remember reading that the only skeletons discovered under mount Taygetos are those of fully grown criminals, like you said.

The worst thing is that i see even university proffesors in documentaries claiming this as well as books by such people.Have serious historians been thrown into kaiadas and only those of questionable quality survived?
Documentaries, movies, books what the hell this is horrible.

There are a lot of misconceptions of Sparta that even professors believe is true, such as the kaiadas of course, not to mention widespread homosexuality and the wearing of capes in battle. All of which isn't true, yet a lot of scholars claim it to be.

Have you seen 'Last Stand of the 300' yet? Not a bad documentary, but it's almost as fictionized as '300' itself.

I sent him this

Dear mr Pressfield i have read and enjoyed your work many times over as it greatly satisfies me that you try to be as close to real history as possible.I was greatly dissapointed when gates of fire wasnt going to become a movie.

But i have a complaint to say the least.

well personally i dont consider Pressfield's opinions 100% true to history. He wrote 2 good novels and some more really mediocre about greek themes. Then capitalised in every chance as a i see it and poped up in every place where the word Sparta appeared. I dont think that making money while you are still hot is bad but it relays to the rest of us to judge the content of books, documentaries, websites and other media.

Why should we be surprised when a commercial writer says something innacurate when there are dozens of ''experts'' that do the same about various things?

Pressfield is a fiction author, not a historian - he should be left seen as such.

I hadnt minded the novel but when he supported it in a documentary it drew the line.

My thoughts exactly.
Novels should not be mentioned in historical documentaries.

Interesting. I wonder what the pit was called which Leonidas kicks the
Persian ambassador into in '300' - if such a thing was even real? 8)

In societies where need to survive was acute, the support of members who could not contribute to the community was not encouraged.
Abandoning babies in the wilderness was a common practice in Ancient times.
Yet it is stressed also on the Spartans

Remember we leave in an age where human beings can survive pinned on bed with mechanical life support because we have medical industry :!:

The ancients did not have these things. We can not grasp their thinking because we have options that they did not.

Kind regards
