Salve!
I would like to cut a little away from the cheek pieces and the neck quard (see the picture) of my Niederbieber helmet to make it more authentic. So here are the questions:
-Is it easy to remove the brass edgings of those parts (they are welded slightly in a couple of tiny spots)? I don`t intend to put them back.
-what would be the best method of cutting the brass after that, Dremel etc?
Thanks in advance!

Robert, I know more or less the pattern of how much and where to cut away the excess areas. The problem is the MATERIAL, I mean is it easy to remove the brass edgings and is it easier/harder to cut brass than iron etc. ...

Hi Jyrki,
Brass is a lot softer than iron and easier to cut. I think a dremel would be the easiest solution. First use heavy duty cutting discs to do the rough shape and you can then file the rest or use your dremel with burrs to remove just the right ammount of metal in the right place.
I don't know how easy it will be to remove the edging... If you aren't going to place it back on I wouldn't be too worried. I'd just try to pry it loose a bit and then try to pull it off with a pair of plyiers. Any residu could be sanded away afterwards...

Jyrki,
I removed the brass from a Deepeeka Gallic H simply by heating it with a propane torch. It was only attached at the joints by brazing. I then had to cut that with a dremel. Once I had reshaped the skirt it was difficult in learning how to anneal and shape the brass back to the piece. However I am confident you can do it. It just requires patience something I am short on.
Once its refitted I used thin slivers of solder to reattach it.

Thanks for the compliment! The photo was taken from our summerhouse a couple of years ago by the lake Päijänne in the middle of the Finland. Here is the same place (dock) in winter...
